This happened in my old hometown, a few blocks from where I grew up.

OMG, what a horrible story. I have never understood how people can stand by and watch something drown. I wonder... if it would have been a person, would the ice have been to thin to get a boat out to them? What a scarey thought.

I probably would have lost my mind and jumped in myself to try to save them. I could not stand to sit there and WATCH my dog suffer
Even if I didn't make it far I'm sure they would have found a way to get to me THUS they could go the rest of the way to get my dog

That was a sad story. Where were the helicopters?

That lake is very small and the dogs were only 25 feet from shore. I understand the danger, but the Fire and Rescue Station that handles water rescue is less than a mile from where those dogs were.
Just add another reason to my list of "Why I moved out of Rockford, IL" the wasted resource capital of the world. The money that should of went to animal service probably helped lease an extra car for the mayor. |

that's horrible. yeah i agree with you i probably would have run out after them, it would be EXTREMLY stupid and i wouldn't tell anyone to do it but i know that they'd probably try a lot harder to save me than they would 'just a dog'

same for me, I would have dived right in and try to get to my dogs if they are drowning even tho' I know I'll probably drown before them and those rescues will run after 'trying' to save me and will go after the dogs

50' of rope and an extension ladder, seperate the ladder and tie the rope to you waist and use the ladder halves to desperse your weight to crawl out. Very common for thin ice rescues.
Very sad.

Why couldn't they have used a flat bottom boat with something to push them out on the ice? that way if the ice broke they would still be floating...they could've even used a "gumby" (cold water survival) suit that is made specifically for freezing water.
I would've found some way to get my dogs out of there...even I was the one doing it |
