I have a nook color that is rooted . The kids love it and i have to fight them for it.
It IS sturdy also and is how I know there are a lot of android apps.
You can get used Nook color for cheap on ebay and also get the sd card that has the Mod on it to turn the ereader into a tablet for 25.00 or so on ebay.

Right now I'm leaning towards the Fire. Can you watch videos on the Nook Color?

Not on the Color, but on the new HD ones you can. Kindles and Nooks are pretty similar.

A good kid one is the nabi 2, if you want to look it up. I've heard great things about it, it comes with a protective padding and you can set up parental controls and stuff (it's a kids tablet, but you can use it too).

It's not the same as Amazon. But, as far as I know, you do have to have Amazon Prime to access their lending library. It depends on what exactly you mean. Some books are available to loan to friends with a Nook for 14 days. I never really got into that so I'm not sure on the specifics of that.

Or if you're referring to going to a library and loaning their e-books, that's totally available. When I worked at B&N I encouraged people to get free books or go to their library. A Kindle or a Nook would be a good choice. While I love Barnes and Noble, I prefer the newer Kindles for MYSELF. I don't think there are 'one size fits all'.

If I was going to get a tablet mainly for my family, I would want something durable, easy to use and one that has great support. Amazon tends to lack the support. I know a lot of people that like Kindles but hate that when anything happens to it, they have to send it in. If you or anyone in your family is tech savvy, this isn't a huge concern. I know that families and the elderly were the main buyers of Nooks.

(I also take aesthetics into consideration. I hate the little circle thing found on some of Nooks. I don't know what they were thinking. Like you're going to hang a tablet off a key chain?)

See I usually wont get it read in 14 days. IF I'm lucky and things are easy I will but not normally. Plus I don't know any friends with them so yeah LOL. I always have Prime for the most part because I order from Amazon ALL. THE. TIME. I have to drive 40 minutes (on a GOOD day) to get to Barnes and Noble and its vastly out of my way so I wouldn't be going there alot anyway.

I just ordered the kindle fire hd last night, then realized I forgot to order it without the ads, tried to cancel the order and it was too late, so I had to order another without the ads. Now I have to return 1 when it comes. This is what happens when I am in a hurry and just hit submit.
