Default A Rash?

Looks like my dog has some kind of rash by her bottom. It's kinda red and she keeps biting at it. I assume dogs get rashes, think I should take her to the vet? Or is there something I can put on it? Any advice is much appreciated

First, clean it with a mild antibacterial soap, rinse it well and pat it dry. Do that two or three times a day and see if there's any change. If it doesn't appear to be any better, call your vet. He/she may tell you to try some Benadryl for a day or two.

I'm assuming that at this time of year in Oklahoma the poison ivy and poison oak has died back to the roots, although the irritant oils will still linger for a long time on the dead leaves and vines. That is one possibility, though.

Check around the places your dog likes to sit and see what's there. It may be just a contact reaction to something. It will give you a better idea of what to ask the vet, though. The more information you've got, even if it's just ruling out possibilities, the easier and more likely it is that your vet will be able to get the right answer.

I don't know why I didn't think about this the first time: go to a pharmacy and get a bottle of the cleanser used for perianal care for home nursing and geriatric care. It is made to be mild, soothing, and antibacterial and you don't have to be so worried about the rinsing, which can be difficult.

It's the easiest and best thing to use on tender, inflamed skin.

Hey thanks Renee, well I'm going to go ahead and take her to the vet. Better to be safe than sorry.

Just try to keep her off of prednisone or other steriods. Vets always seem to want to use them as a magic bullet since they stop the symptoms immediately. They do nothing for the underlying cause, but the dog feels better right off. Problem is, the long term side effects can be awful - like tumors.

Yeah took her there, and fortunately its not skin mites, I always worry about that cause Max had those when he was a pup. He said its just allergies, and gave me some stuff to rub on her. He was going to give her a Cortizon shot, dunno if I spelled that right but said she's too young.

Price is no object when it comes to my baby girl, but lol a little tiny tube of that stuff costs over 10 bucks. I always find it funny that I take better care of my pets than I do myself. Like for instance when she gets that Kennel Cough shot, guess that's like a flu shot, and I don't even get a flu shot. Now to rub this stuff on her and try to keep her from licking it.

Well that's good to hear. Glad it's not something awful and glad she missed the cortisone! It's just another steroid, with all the side effects.

Bet you never thought you'd be spending a thrilling evening at home rubbing salve on your dog's bottom!

Try putting some hot spot on your doggy it will prevent your dog from licking and biting.
