I told Karl very early on that one of the reasons I was here was that it seemed like a good way to improve my communication via the written word, and it has been. I made it a point to NOT use any emoticons for a time, to force myself to try to get the mood across via the verbiage.
It has definitely helped me in writing dialogue! It also brought me an appreciation of the use of short paragraphs. But we didn't have any grammar fascists then . . . Communicating casually on a forum is a far cry from writing dissertations though, and if you try to write in that style as a regular practice you aren't going to be communicating effectively.

I think that's a fair rule... and I say that as someone who DOES make a lot of grammatical and spelling errors. I am horrible at spelling. I always have been--but luckily for me, in 99% of situations that matter, I have access to spell-check.
Plus, I feel like if more jobs did this, Donny'd have an easier time finding work, since they'd weed so many people out. (and yes, on forums I tend to type like I talk; I'd say "Donny'd" not Donny would, and I talk in long rambling sentences with lots of commas and side notes and stuff. My main problem on forums is being too vague and leaving too much room for interpretation* and then having to explain myself again.) *I misspelled interpretation the first time I typed it.
