I wouldn't be surprised if it became the norm in the next few years (although it certainly isn't now). It's more portable, can serve as a tablet, and does everything a computer does.

I suspect it's the 12 year old who came up with it having to be an iPad My sister pulled that numerous times, even to the point of telling my mom that the gym teacher told them to get a certain brand of gym shoes.

It worked, too

Quite a few of my cousins in middle school have ipads for school (The school provides them though! ) because their school has an intergrated program that includes all their textbooks.
It's a great way to save paper, save their backs from the torture of heavy books etc..
but to expect parents to pay for them? No way.

As it is, the school is just "renting" them to the students..and they are insured but parents pay a fee if the ipad is damaged.
It's a private school, so the fee for the ipad is in tuition.

I think it's insane to expect parents to pay for ipads for students. Computer access? Sure.. there are libraries and most schools will rent laptops to students.
but if it's not part of tuition (aka: it's an amount you KNOW the parent is paying/can afford) I would say no way is that fair.

As for if they are useful? Incredibly. The school program itself is incredible..I've played with it. Forums to ask questions to teachers/other students, place for parents to check grades/see notes to them from teachers, textbooks, a library of videos for help on topics, FAQ, extra research on topics, school email, due dates, syllabus, agenda etc.,..
I wish I had the program in school!

That said.. the ipad without the program. I can still imagine it being useful (textbooks especially would be great in that format) but not truly "necessary" by any means.

and the while whole ipad thing is awesome.. the kids still need computers. So it's not ideal for a family that can't afford both.

lol, the majority of people at church have their scriptures and hymnbooks on their tablets now vs. having to lug around a bunch of books.

No they don't NEED them.

If the school requires them the school will provide them.

And even a computer I don't see the students HAVING to have one. The school should have a library or a computer lab where there are computers to use.

One of the local public schools require an apple computer. They are more expensive than a ipad but the school does provide them.

The issue is that parents have to pay when its broken. And its happened

I think books online are cheaper so its better if they find cheaper computers.

I don't know what the norm is anymore, but given the choice between a pencil/paper..and a fun piece of technology that can give you instant feedback? I'd imagine the kid would enjoy doing their homework a little bit more. Just another tool.

I've been taking online college courses and enjoy doing math on the online program. It tells me if I got the problem right or wrong, and if it's wrong, it walks me through the steps to get it right, and gives me a different problem. It eliminates the "do you score homework on just attempting it, or getting it right/wrong" thing.

I'm 25, so it's been a while since I was in grade school. Even so, I did HAVE to have a computer for homework in high school and middle school, and it was highly recommended in elementary school. Now that I'm in college, YES, I NEED a computer. A laptop, actually, to take notes in class. EVERYTHING must be typed and 90% of stuff needs to be turned in online.

Should you expect to spend that much in 8 years? Well, technology will have advanced a GREAT deal in 8 years. iPads will probably be cheaper than they are now. I don't see why it has to be an iPad and not a regular laptop, though. But anyway, I would venture to guess in 8 years most textbooks will be e-books only. It's already starting to move that way. In which case, yes, expect to NEED to buy a computer/laptop/tablet/whatever they come out with next for your kids. Times do change, and nobody can say for certain where we'll be in 8 years.

A few schools have started trying to go to etextbooks which is actually cheaper to check out iPads than provide paperbacks.

I'm guessing its not the same situation though?
