I have never once heard comments like that!

I have, on occasion, had customers who say their next dog will be from a breeder because their current rescue dog has issues (usually overly shy or reactive with other dogs). But it's never been "ewwwww rescue dogs, yuck!" it's more frustration/this isn't what they thought they signed up for.

LOL nah, these are mostly from ferret people who are apparently against rescue dogs... most are in the UK or/and USA, I think. The one time we've had somebody move away was a stranger at the dog park.

No, but really it never ceases to amaze me that on some ferret forums they are all for marshall ferrets (mill ) but pet store dogs / rescue dogs are ick. Ummm.... and the difference is what exactly? lol

I never said nor "acted like" I was surprised there was such a group. I am a bit surprised to see my "friends" and pages that I "like" supporting such a group, though. And I am surprised at how this breeder hating attitude is spreading to more and more people and groups. If I had seen a bunch of anti-rescue pictures in my newsfeed, this post would have been about that. I also said, "I truly believe that ethical/responsible/reputable breeders can have a place in this world along side rescuers/shelters." Maybe that wasn't clear, but I meant breeders and rescuers working together, as in the opposite of the second picture I posted and the opposite of being anti-rescue. I don't understand why rescue and breeding have to be mutually exclusive?

I, personally, have never met anyone who is anti-rescue. I have met people who would never rescue/adopt a dog, but they always make it a point to say that they respect rescue work. Anti-breeder/breeding people are everywhere and they are multiplying. I think it's a dangerous attitude to be anti-breeder or anti-rescue. That's the only point I was trying to make, sorry if it was unclear.

Here is a summary on our breeding costs and what we've made back:

1st litter: Faith had to have an emergency c-section, +ultrasounds, x-rays, health testing and stud fee, got eclampsia after the puppies were 2 or so weeks, so we spent approximately $3,700. 5 puppies born, 1 died, 1 kept, so sold 3 puppies for around $800. Total: -$1,300.

2nd litter: Planned c-section at recommendation of a repro vet, +ultrasound, x-rays, and stud fees. Spent around $3,000. 5 puppies born, two kept, so three sold for around $800. Total: -$600.

3rd litter: Sadie's first litter, stud fees, ultrasound, x-rays, health testing, approximately $1,200. 3 puppies born, sold for around $800. Total: +$1,200. (yay)

Tried to breed Sadie twice, no success. -$750 (stud fee + medical expenses)

4th litter: Sadie's second litter. Imported semen from England, surgical implant, +blood test to determine pregnancy, x-rays, and emergency vet visit after she had been in labor for 11 hours with no puppies: Approximately $4,000 spent. 2 puppies born. Kept one puppy, sold the other for $1,000 (higher price because the litter was from imported semen and was so expensive to breed). Total: -$3,000.

Fiona bred, didn't take. -$750.

So, lets add that up.

-$1,300
-$600
+ $1,200
-$750
-$3,000
-$750

Grand total: -$5,200.

Let me go quit my day job and live off of my dogs!

If anything, if you don't have a rescue, I've noticed people look down on you.

Yes, I consider Saxon to be a rescue dog (sometimes I call him a second hand dog) because I adopted him from a family that was going to take him to a shelter if they couldn't find a new home for him. I was unable to adopt from any local shelters or rescues because of my age (I was 20 at the time that I got Saxon) and the fact that I rent, but I did prevent one dog from going into a shelter. I've had a couple of people tell me that Saxon isn't a real rescue because I didn't get him from a shelter, so I guess it depends on how you look at it.

I'm not saying I see it ALL the time. But I have run into people who looked down on me for having a mixed breed rescue.
