Default Payton and Rally

In a little over a month, the local club is putting on their obedience/rally trial. Auggie is getting entered because I want to get that third leg for his RA.

However, I dunno how many of you remember when I posted about Payton's "debut" in rally, which consisted of lots of bark-screaming and pulling and very little rally.

I'm not sure if I should try entering Pay again. I don't train at this club (and honestly wouldn't unless you paid me to do so...) and unfortunately they don't have any fun matches on schedule yet - doesn't mean they won't have one but there isn't one on the schedule - so I don't exactly have a way to gauge how he's doing and if he's likely to have another meltdown on me. He is doing amazing out and about in public... but I've never had a meltdown like what happened in rally anywhere else anyway. And Payton has been a spectator at tons of agility trials without any problems, so it's not like I could just take him to spectate somewhere and judge off that.

So, stuff that is good is happening and all, but I'm not 100% confident he won't flip out on me at the trial. I don't want to set him up for failure by entering him before he is ready, but how do I know if he's ready? If I'm worried about it, should I just not enter him? But then I would probably never enter him haha. I wasn't ready to enter Auggie in agility when I entered him, but our trainer said I should and turns out he WAS ready, so I'm obviously not the best judge of my own dogs here... =P

I can't remember, but in rally can you excuse yourself like in agility? I know in obedience you really can't, but if it's an option, I'd enter and treat it as a match, then if he gets overstimulated or out of control, excuse yourself and put him back in the crate.

Yes if you can leave I would go and treat it like a fun match. If he looses his marbles, get a behaviour, party and leave. If he is his stellar self, continue on.

Yeah, you can leave the ring... I did it both times earlier this year with Payton. And got yelled at because I picked him up and you can't pick your dog up in rally. I didn't think dragging my barking, screaming dog out by his leash was appropriate either though... =P

I guess I can try it again. I'm probably going to enter Auggie both days in case we miss a Q one day. Sometimes he goes all "HA HA THIS MEANS WE PLAY AGILITY RIGHT??" nutso on me in the ring and is a bigger brat than usual. Plus some of the new signs are confusing to me. Not sure if I should do one or two days for Pay. I'd like to only put him in Sunday and bring him Saturday to walk around and gauge how he's acting, but it's inside and the building is tiny so he can't come just hang out... ugh... just not sure.

With the new rules, you'll probably get excused anyway. I have been to some trials recently and one judge did that a lot. A lot of DQs are happening.

But you can always tell the judge, "Thank you, I'm finished."

It's possible, just not done very often. I've had lots of obedience people tell me "Oh, you don't just leave the ring!" like it's the worst thing that could happen.

Do they have show'n go's this club? If so, you might be able to take him to one to test the waters so to speak?
