I'm late to the party, as usual, but after seeing some disc dogs last weekend, I've decided I'd like to try it with Kaia.

We're gonna be an atypical team, as she's a Rottweiler, but why the heck not try it.

So far my google searches haven't yielded a lot in my area. I did find a disc dog meetup that's a 2x/month deal, so I'll try to go to their meetup in July.

I'm having serious envy of the rest of you and your beautiful flying dogs!

Em and I have almost completely phased out treats - she's now retrieving the disc because she LIKES PLAYING DISC rather than because I sent her out to retrieve an item. I am SO happy.

I backed off a little bit with Bloo mostly because the weather has been crap and she's too insane to safely do it inside, but she's awesome.

That's great!!! Hopefully it clears up soon, I want to see Bloo play some disc!

How's everything else going with the rest of the chaz disc dogs? Updates?

Right now, I'm working on memorizing both routines, I have Zinga's down and most of Zuma's down. The trouble is that we keep adding more tricks and then I change sequences and have to memorize them all over again.

With Zinga, I'm working on a backstall juggle that is so much harder than it looks. We got some great tips from the last seminar, but it's just a matter of coordination at this point. I'm also working on Zinga's footstall flip, she's catching about 70% of them now. It's not her head-over-heels flip that she does from the ground, but a typical twirl flip. I'm more than happy with that!

Zuma is working on a standing juggle and footstall juggle. We just spent a ton of time rebuilding her dog catch, I'm happy to say that we have it back! Now if I can just get a throw in there so it counts towards the USDDN format, I'll be happy.

Next comp is the last weekend in June, I feel so much better prepared for this one than the last.

I'm mostly working on not vomiting when I think about the upcoming qualifier. I'm being totally serious, I'm very nervous and it just kind of hit me today that it's coming up very soon.

In other news, Dodger has his first sequence! And Codex and I are just working on our routine to make sure we cover all the Team Elements in our sequences.

Rescue remedy!!

Just pretend it's a big playdate. You guys are a great team, you are going to rock it! And if for some freakish reason things don't go as planned, there are so many qualifiers in your future, this one won't matter.

Go out there and show them how much fun you and Dex have.

Haha thanks Sara, you'll have to repeat that to me a few times I think. And I need to buy a new bottle of RR just for this event. So excited but also so nervous all at once.

Talon has got this distance/accuracy down! Now....how do you make that jump to freestyle? I'm not sure where to start with it at all. My guess would be just teaching different tricks/catches and then putting them into sequences, but how do you know what sequence works best or which tricks to put together?? blah, D/A is so much easier! lol

So, I want to start doing some vault catches, but I'm kind of fumbling about trying to teach one. I figure asking on here may clarify things as well as motivate me enough to work on it consistently. I've been so busy with other things that my dog training has really faltered.

Anyways, so Cohen's vaults turn to her right. (See video below - just one from earlier in the thread which I quoted.) I'm right handed. When she vaults she ends up on my left. How the heck am I supposed to toss the disc in such a way that she'll catch it (especially when in the early stages of learning)? Do people just toss the occasional disc with their left hand? Do they toss the disc over their dog?

I'd love to see some more disc conversation here since I enjoyed it so much, and, as I said, my training is pretty lacklustre right now. I'm trying to develop some new behaviours with some good "wow" factors.

I think the move you are doing at the beginning of the video with Cohen is actually a rebound. A vault uses the handler's body to get to the disc. Typically (although there are no official rules LOL) people start with a leg vault. It's easy, straight forward and there is more leeway with the toss. A rebound (swimmer's turn, etc) usually transitions to a reverse chest vault where the dog approaches from your front, turns on your body but heads UP instead of back down to the ground. The disc is placed up and out for the catch. You'd have to throw with your left hand I think for that one too just because of the direction she turns.

The rebound she does could totally translate into a back reverse vault as well however I still think you'd have to throw with your left hand for it :/ Unless you pull a Ron Watson and can fandangle it with your right hand over the right shoulder.

Cohen's flip catch is also to her right. I think she's very right handed :P I think you might have to start practicing throwing with your left hand!

I learned a trick from a weekend training seminar recently for this... take a stack of notecards and write down one trick you know per card. The trick can be with or without a disc (so spin, crawl, rebound, wave, etc all count as a trick). Then shuffle, pull out three-four and put them in an order that seems reasonable. Try it out, if you like, write that sequence down. BOOM. First sequence done. Then do it again and again until you are happy with how many you have. The idea is to try different tricks near each other and figure out which ones flow nicely into the next and which just don't work.
