It isn't a matter of IF he were a friend or someone i know. He IS a friend and someone I know.

I describe him as a good "man" who would give of himself for anyone friend or foe. Someone who loves completely and puts others above himself. The ultimate philanthropist. My savior.

The Bible has been edited several times, and one major time was strictly on the subject of Jesus's humanity...so it's very possible he had a wife or children and it was omitted to further push his divinity. And the Bible certainly does omit a huge portion of his life, and immediately thereafter. For example, there's several decades between his death and the first book. Just missing. There's no inbetween about "how Christianity was spread after this one guy died in history". Just happened, apparently, with several missing decades in the middle. That would be the perfect time for kids to have come after him, grow, create their own history, etc.

I think he was a man. Nothing more. If he had a wife and children, or a woman and children, as is more likely, then I wouldn't care.

My mom and I always figured he was probably married. People called him "rabbi". In that culture, that was a very specific title and you couldn't become a rabbi if you were an unmarried man. Not to mention, a never married 30-something year old man was something of an abomination. It's more like, if he was single that is something that would have been commented on just for being more out of the ordinary.

Some of the personal interactions it describes between him and Mary Magdalene, especially the role she plays in preparing his body for burial, makes me wonder if she wasn't his wife.

As for who he is, in my eyes? He's the best big brother evah! Kinda hard to describe with words, but I'll think about it some more.

Would you mind presenting your evidence for this please? Because there is a great deal of evidence that supports the Bible as we read it to today to be THE text as it was written.

I learned in 1st grade that stories change drastically each time they're told. The bible is no different, nor are the stories contained in it. I learned that things lose and change meanings each time they're translated into new languages and into new cultures around the world. I also know that bible isn't in its first edition or print. I know that I can go pick up quite a few bibles today from various groups and they will all be different.

It always facinates me when self described secular humanists react with glee when trying to disprove something they do not even believe.

This said... Yes, yes it has been translated. But we have about 9000 copies of various whole and partial Greek New Testament manuscripts. Properly translated we get the inspired Word of God. Further, the manuscripts are way too consistent to have been edited, in the context of this discussion. THAT meaning a base modern reason for not believing the scriptures is "because its just a story changed by men". I'm not going to convince you, you are not going to convince me. Why? Because its more than just words in a book.

But most of all.... When you just read it... You understand. But it requires the open mind that is so dear to our modern secular society. The concept that there are reasons for all those rules God gave to us.

Indeed... Take the "New World Translation" for instance. That is the Jehovah's Witness version. It is SO full of holes and was clearly re-written in the context of this thread. But it was re-written by a person who had poor English grammar and VERY poor Greek grammar. (Yes, my grammer stinks too, thats not the point. LOL)

Now, take the King James and the versions directly translated from it. People with good Greek grammar can go and prove that the English versions translated from KJV are accurate to the Greek manuscripts we have. Further, those Greek manuscripts are consistent and go as far back as 400 AD.

I think it's so cool that people have such an intimate relationship with their religion/Jesus. I always thought it was a very formal thing but describing him as a friend is really interesting

For some reason that religion was never something that really worked for me and it's not something I believe.. but still, Jesus sounds like a pretty cool dude from your descriptions lol

Sorry for the thread-jack, I really have nothing to say about the bible. Don't know if it's edited or not or where it came from or what it's doing.. don't really care to be honest. Real or not real, people find inspiration from it. Good people see good in it and do good and bad people find bad and use it to hurt people.. it's a book. Edited or no, it creates change and causes people to act. It's what those actions are that matters to me. Not the book itself. Wether it's "real or not" doesn't matter, it's real in it's effects and the lives it has changed.

I am going to refrain from comparing it to Harry Potter but it's the best example of what I feel that I can think of lol The book may be fiction but it has affected my life in very real ways.. how I treat people, how I think, dream, love, lessons I've learned, things I can relate to, how I speak, how I see the world.. etc..
so doesn't that make it pretty real anyway?

Regardless of how much the bible has been edited or where it came from.. it's real in what it does to people and how they react to it. So yea, if it's real to someone and they feel it's real and true to it's words..then I respect that.
