I say whippet too.
The off leash thing IMO is very overrated. Sure with average Joe Public, but then again no breed should be off leash with Joe Public.. Most whippet owners I know have off leash dogs.

I would invite you to consider the Portuguese Podengo (medio or Grande) a sighthound, can be aloof or wary - if raised with other animals pretty ok (mine run with a Podengo Pequeno (small) and 2 basenjis. Good for coursing, agility, nose work etc. www.podengo-mediogrande.com
