I already have an idea of what I'm looking for for a next dog, but suggestions are always welcome. I am open to either a breeder dog or a shelter dog right now, though I'm leaning towards breeder:
35-60lbs No professional grooming Low incidence of DA, won't kill a cat it is raised with Aloof with strangers- doesn't have to dislike them, but I don't want my dog to be everyones dog, if that makes sense Agility potential Some off leash reliablility, though that isn't particulalry important. I rent, so no commonly banned breeds or breeds known for being very barky No drooling! Slobber creeps me out big time Medium to medium high energy I know that I am not suited for retrievers or terriers. I really like sighthounds and herding dogs.

I thought of several herding dogs that easily fit that criteria but every one of them barks.

It's difficult to keep a herding dog in an apartment without barking, because they have an instinct to protect. If they hear something they think might be trouble, the tendency is to bark. And any dog with bad nerves will do the same.

Herding breeds always seem to get caught with the barking, the cat, energy level, or DA
Poodle, but they require professional grooming Whippet, but not so good for offleash and cats I'm not sure about if they are raised together

A smaller, mid-high drive English Shepherd might suit you well. Easy care coat, good off switch, good with cats, very reliable off leash, not very social with strangers. Quinn is one of the only DR ESs I know of, never heard of one being full out DA. Just make sure to socialize with appropriate dogs as English Shepherds like to police play and tend to have very set standards of what they deem appropriate. Usually not "dog park dogs", anyways. Barking could be a problem though - Quinn is extremely quiet, never barks, but she's quieter than most.

English Shepards have caught my eye, and I am considering one. Whippets are the other breed I like. The off leash thing is somethign I would like, but not something critical. After all, Argon had to be walked on leash his entire life.
The dog doesn't have to be silent, and I actually don't mind a little alarm barking, but someting on a sheltie level would be way too much. I"m not much for a 'I'm barking because I love the sound of my own barking' type dog.

I would stay away from breeds that have a high prey drive if you're wanting a dog that won't kill your cat when it matures. But you can never be 100%. Buster my coonhound was raised with my cat Miagi, they loved each other then and they love each other now. He doesn't have the prey drive at all. It just depends.

Whippet... We've met loads that are all good off leash. Out of the sighthounds they seem to have the best likelihood for offleash reliability.
