I had that same feeling with my old vet. you couldn't go there for anything without them coming at you with a paper filled with listed services that HAD to be done. he seemed a nice enough person, but he was all about money. they wouldn't even look at your dog without insisted it needed a fecal exam (which ALWAYS came up positive for worms..which they then padded the bill with those extra meds) my last straw with him was when he insisted on a complete blood work-up cause my cat had a hot spot...THEN insisted she be on medication (that he sold) for the rest of her life. paleeeese...the hot spot cleared in a week. I finally found a new vet that is wonderful. a no-nonsense kind of guy who only charges what you're there for. I found him thru the local animal shelter.....he helps there, too. it's a drive, but worth it!!! I no longer cringe thinking one trip to the vet is gonna empty my bank account. here's another gripe I had about the old vet....he NEVER let you be in with your dog. maybe it's me...but I like to see what's really being done. boy, I really couldn't stand that guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

All the vets I've had charge nothing for a consultation if you're planning on getting something after it (e.g. ear crop, spay/neuter, etc.). $90 is just plain messed up. I have a friend that knows of a vet in her area that charges $400 for a spay! That's a rip off. Around here I can get a spay for like $50. Stupid greedy $400 charging vet. What a way to promote spay and neuter -_-

I am so pissed off at Banfield (attached to Petsmart). I'm on the Puppy Wellness Plan, costs $300 for this year and covers neutering. Today I brought him in to get neutered, thinking it's fully covered by the plan. Guess what, it's not.... extra $18 for pain medication (injected before surgery), $40 for 2 week supply of antibiotics, and another $41 for 2 weeks supply of pain killers. Beware of Banfield, they rape you with overpriced medication and hidden fee's. This is the third time I got raped by Banfield...... RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPE

When the "nurse" who takes you into the room spends more time with you than the actual vet that perscribes medicine, it'd be time for me to switch vets.
my god, you described Banfield perfectly.

I have heard endless complaints about their puppy plan! It's a cruddy way of doing business on their part because they are punishing the good owners that are trying to do what is best for their new puppy vs. the owners that never want to do a thing! Change vets!

imo, i think finding a nice compassionate vet is well worth the search. a few months ago i lost a cat to feline leukemia. they arranged payment, called everyday and got every charge approved. not once did they charge for "consultation".

SOOOOOOOO many vets out there suck. I too had a vet that was always RUSH RUSH RUSH and I NEVER had enough time to ask him all my questions and if I would make him stay longer so I could keep asking he would get Peed off! When I am a vet I am having one appointment every 20 miniutes with appointment block times throughout the day when I see no patients for 20 miniutes (to cover having to spend extra time with a person and dog that needed it) because I think my time is the most valuable service I can give my patients!

I also am gonna do reduced cost spay/neuter for people who can prove they're poor and free for super poor people and shelter dogs

My clinic will be canine only and we'll have general practitioners and specialists on staff (I'll be the cardiologist).

I look forward to all the dogs I'll help and all the relationships I'll come into!

Great point showpug! You are right! While I am sure some vets like any other profession in the world, may be out to make more than their share, all I have known are just earning an honest living doing what we ask them to do. The vets I have worked with always tried to give very accurate estimates but I think if they are asked to do something they expect people realize there is a fee for their time and expertise, even if it is to trim nails. Not an easy task usually and often takes at least two staff depending on the size and willingness of the dog.

I thank my lucky stars that I have a wonderful vet. He's not the cheapest in town, but I wouldn't go anywhere else.
