Limit has hair growing on his head that is a totally different color than the adult hair coming in on his back. Is he going to be two different colors of red? The stuff on the top of his head is a gorgeous, rusty red color. The stuff on his back is the same color as the rest of his body - Kelpie red.

Well, I can't speak for his specific color, but I notice he's a tan point. Enda has rusty tan directly opposite her inner ear and silver undercoat behind her ears all the way down to where her neck meets her shoulders.
Maybe part of his adult coat coming in before other areas is what I'm thinking?

I've seen it happen in a couple black and tan kelpies, one much more severe than the other (half brothers) where the ones neck had lighter hair grow in on his neck and it looked almost sable. The other has a bit of lighter hair on the neck in with his black hairs but it's barely noticeable.

Heh, I've seen that soft, rusty red hair on lots of different red/liver/chocolate dogs. I just noticed it on a Lab the other day.
I think it's just undercoat peeking through, the Lab I saw was shedding out. I bet on your guy it's just his adult coat getting itself sorted out.
