Great posts Barbara and Teal.

Are there manbiting APBTs out there? Of course. But I think they are in quite a tremendous minority. There are a lot of APBTs and APBT mixes around here that are hunting dogs, a lot of them seem to be Eli or Jeep/Redboy dogs. When I see an APBT (or an AmStaff) I don't tend to worry. I ask to pet the dog and go about my way.

Bullies on the other hand? Never ask to pet them. Give them a wide berth. Avoid them when I see them. Seems like every "pit bull attack" I've seen has two things in common, blue fur and a big fat head, indicative of a bully type dog. Probably has a craigslist dog somewhere in his "pedigree".

Most people would see a champion ABKC Extreme Bully and say, "woah, look at that pit bull." So yes, I think identification is that much of a problem. Animal control doesn't know CRAP about breed identification, period.

So she's not a real pit bull? She's a mutt that looks like a pit bull? What gives your dog more right to bare the name than the others claiming it and being disparaged?

The animal control here asked if my Rhodesian Ridgeback was a big pit bull....

I was just like "What?!??".

I have amazing sweet AmBully clients and I have two scars from two pit bulls who didn't like me near their moms. I with I could paint breeds with such a wide brush but when it comes to that type of defaming accusation I know too well how inexperienced I would look if I did.

So, that doesn't answer my question though...?

Why, when people advocate proper identification of the breed, are they automatically pegged with THIS label? Someone earlier went on a small unprovoked tangent about this...

Sorry, but I'm not one of those "if your dog isn't game, it's not an APBT" people. My dog doesn't have papers herself, but I know her lineage and she is an American Pit Bull Terrier. However, as I said, pit bull is no longer just one breed. It's literally dozens of breeds. Pit bull is now a type.

Just to add: pit bull shouldn't be a type, but it is what it is.

I've meet some sweet ones, too. Show breed bullies that we met outside a bully show in Atlanta, as well as my sister's BYB from the flea market. (although the bullies outside the show were struggling for air so they may have been aggressive under normal circumstances, I don't know.) But it seems like they're the ones you see on the news.

So, my question is how do you gain the right to tell others that their dogs are not pit bulls when you yourself have no proof of what you call one?

Personally I agree that if it walks, talks, and smells like a pit bull the likelihood is it is an (american) pit bull (terrier) or valid mix there of. However you'll not catch me trying for a double standard with my dogs. I'm confused how some feel so comfortable doing this.

Because if a dog is 90 lbs with a head as wide as a car, it isn't an American Pit Bull Terrier. As I said, that is what the general public is under the impression of. They think pit bull=APBT=big giant blue dog.
