Default Caucasian Mountain Dog

Hey, I'm looking for more info or pics on this breed. I've been reading up on them and would like to learn more about their history (still though, any information on them will be fine). I know Oriondw should have some information on the breed. Thanks!

Most of information is in Russian.

English sites pretty much have all same recycled info. Everysite has the same only in a different words.

None of them go really in depth because you can write books on how these dogs behave, they are so complex.

If you ask any specific question related to the breed, ill answer it

Luckily Im russian and I read most of the published content.

I actually have a 500 page book on them laying around here

oriondw, can you post some pics of your dog? I know you had one in your sig a while ago didn't you? I told my dad about them and now he is interested. Apparently something has been trying to get into the rabbit huch and they are being overrun by little naimals without a dog now and he wants soemnthing that can hold its own. I like them but I have a while before I can get another dog.

And are they a well known enough breed that they are on breed ban lists for insurance companies? He needs to switch anyway because his won;t even let him have a dobe but I've never seen them mentioned before.

Well for a dog to be any effective in protecting against predators it should be at least 2 years old. Putting a puppy for protection work will just get it killed.

Adopting a 2 year old dog for protection of rabbits is dangerous beause he might as well eat those rabbits himself. Even with new dog not all are suited for protection of targets such as rabbits. Need to talk to breeder and have a puppy trained from birth around various livestock. I know a few breeders do that at request.

I doubt you'd want to wait 2 some years Search my theads, i posted a bunch of pictures before, dont have time to upload them again at the moment.

They could be on a breed ban list thanks to people like moodygirl but i doubt it. I havent heard of any.

I think getting a well trained adult GSD or Dobe is a better idea honestly.

Well i dont know waht you mean by small animals, do you mean like small foxes? Or pack of wolves?

he isn't a crazy old man We never once had a problem with my little beagle there when I was younger so I don;t think some pup is going to get killed. thanks for your help.

possums, racoons, roaming dogs, apparently we have a coyote problem now to.

And believie me I tried to talk him into a dobe But he wants something that can be outside when needed without needing a sweater,as he puts it anyway!

Well.

Possums, racoons, other roamins dogs and cayotes do pose a significat problem for a puppy.

Earliest i believe they can effectively kill a cayote is around 9-10 months of age, and thats rare. Most mature very slowly and come into their protectiveness around 1-2 years of age. Females are usually earlier to protect

Trust when i say, they arent really effective protectors at age of 2-8 months As i said before, personally, i wouldnt let a dog thats younger then 2 years of age protect a farm from things you described alone.
