I grew up in the pokemon, digimon, dragonball/dragonballz era, and I hated them all...I know there is probably anime out there for me, but I just have no interest.

Even back in the 80s a lot of the Tex Avery, Warner Bros, and Disney cartoons they showed on TV were horribly racist. I found some DVDs of old ones and got all excited to share them with the kids. All I can say is, I'm really glad I previewed them first. They were borderline horrifying. Think yellow skinned people with giant buck teeth saying, "Deeng Dang Dong Doon Dong." Yeah...

Um... yeah you can't judge Anime based on pokemon.
There is something about anime style that appeals to me a lot. Just drawing-wise. Really detailed anime can be very beautiful and intricate in a way American cartoons generally aren't. It also doesn't hurt that anime is often tackling some more unique or more mature subject matter.

It can be super realistic to very 'cartoonish' but it still has a depth/charm to it that I find really appealing that I don't find in most western cartoons.

Anime- few can be called really good, the rest, recycled junk. I use to be a huuuuge anime fan, especially in my teen years. After a while, I notice the common trends in many animes, and certain things started to really annoy me. Pathetic anime girls who have nothing better to do but to worry about the main boy which happen to be in about 98% of anime. The opposite of the pathetic girl- the angry one who attacks the main boy for no good reason at all and is mad at the world for no good reason. The annoying cute thing that must follow the group. The unnessary bystanders who do nothing but comment on the fight/events that occur. The pointless fillar episodes. The talking before and during the fight. Everybody in the whole fricken anime having a sob story.ETC, etc.
Nowadays, there are few animes I can watch without feeling annoyed by something. The good ones though, tend to be REALLY good. Soul Eater, Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, Azumanga Daioh, Tora Dora, Wolf Rain and many others are just utter joys.

I LOVE Sailor Moon and Pokemon. But a lot of anime is just creepy and/or too serious and boring.

HEY. I abhor anime but do not knock on Pokemon
![]() It's a pretty ridiculous show/franchise but I grew up on that show and loved every moment of it. And Digimon, and Sailor Moon, and yes, I loved those, too. But that aside, anime gets fairly atrocious... with a few exceptions. And I've had more than enough friends try to convince me otherwise, so I'm not just using Pokemon to generalize all of anime. Some of it is too creepy, many have random moments catering to certain fetishes (and I don't mean anime porn, I mean the mainstream stuff), many are altogether too similar (which is not just an anime issue, of course), and there's the exaggerations in voice/expression/characterization. I am more than open to changing my opinion. I LOVE Hayao Miyazaki. I just finished watching The Secret World of Arrietty (screenplay written by Miyazaki) with my younger sister and adored it. I disliked Ponyo, though found it extremely cute. Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite movies of all time, it's a classic. The soundtrack for Princess Mononoke was beautiful (as was everything else about the movie). Spirited Away is another favorite. I liked Grave of the Fireflies well enough, too (though it isn't Miyazaki). If anyone wants to watch beautiful and bittersweet anime movies, I strongly recommend Makoto Shinkai's movies. The quality and animation is stunning (more so the scenery rather than the character styles). Comparable to Miyazaki but not at all "feel good" types. Very simplistic. Children Who Chase Lost Voices was fantastic, a little Miyazaki-esque, actually. 5 Centimeters Per Second and The Place Promised in Our Early Days are both great, and I haven't gotten around to watching Voices of a Distant Star yet. ![]() ![]()

I don't enjoy much "mainstream" anime. And, unfortunately, mainsteam is considered the bulk of anime. Not true at all.
I enjoy Clannad, LOVED Angel Beats, Blood+, FLCL, etc, etc...Not so much all the others you always hear people raving about. Death Note was nothing special to be, for example. Wolf Rain was okay. Not amazing. Full Metal Alchemist...meh. EDIT: Actually, Angel Beats made me straight up bawl at the end, and in several moments throughout the series. No joke. It has it's funny parts, but it is very sad. Lovely music, too.
