I used prefolds on both kids for a while. Since we're staying with my mom now I don't want to be putting poo laundry in her machine (he doesn't have newborn poo anymore, bleah. lol).

It was really wonderful and saved soooo much money. And the cute!

There aren't any pictures of Aurelia in her cloth diapers because those covers were all old off white PUL fabric. She looked cuter in dresses. Here's one of Samuel in a cover I knitted though:

It's knitted flat. His prefold is closed with a snappi, and the cover is pinned with big diaper pins. There wasn't any danger of poking him since the knit doesn't resist the pins, and it's way more adjustable that way. The pattern called for buttons (I worried about choking) or velcro, which stuck horribly to the wool and was not awesome.

Wool does an amazing job of holding in the pee. I never went back to plastic stuff after that.

My kids' first diapers came from my old boss. I raised all three of her kids in them, and then they got passed on to us. I wonder how many thousands of disposables they've kept out of landfills so far.

Thanks. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. I keep myself sane by stocking up.

Something else people don't consider is the water table. Disposable companies recommend dumping solid waste in the toilet before tossing diapers. How many people do that? Not many I should imagine. So now you have human fecal matter sitting in landfills draining into the environment. How disgusting can you get?

Same with re-usable cloth menstral pads. the whole idea just grosses me out.

When it comes to disgusting bodily fluids... the less contact I have with it the better. I like things that I can use then THROW AWAY and forget about lol no muss no fuss.

I can't imagine putting that stuff in my laundry or having it around my house!!! or having to carry it around dirty, even in a bag!!!

so no lol I do love the environment..but it just seems like a yucky hassle to me.

This is how I feel too, Fran!

As much as I'd love to keep things like this out of landfills, the idea of "reusing" diapers and pads just disgusts me. I don't want to put poopy/peed on things through my washing machine. I want to just put my diapers in the diaper genie and be done with them!

That's the thing. You DON'T put poop through your wash. You dump it first. You soak your diapers in vinegar which degrades urine to nothing THEN wash.

As for hassle. I find killing the planet a hassle. It hassles me that my grandchildren won't have a beautiful world because of a "hassle".

Oh come on now. LOTS of things "kill" the planet. I'm willing to bet that you drive a car that uses gas, eat meat, live in a house where trees were cut down so it could be built, and are unable to recycle everything you use (thus creating garbage as well).
