Default Three little Backup

Videos

Free heel with a sit & down in motion and a recall to front and finish.

And some trick work. Weaving between the legs, about finish, right, left, and barking (that's not a trick? crap...)

And bitework, cleaning up his guard and reintroducing blinds

Lemur says thank you,

Nice obedience! Do you guys have your BH or will you be trialing soon?

And super lolz at the jaw clacking in the blinds. I never really realized how much work goes into training the blinds until I started training with Pan's breeder's IPO group a few times this summer.

Nice work though, Backup is looking like a grownup guy!

I think I'll have Denis take him for his BH this November. I would do it but it's costly and I'm not sure I want to throw the money away if I panic. Of course that means I need to have Denis train him a bit in obed which I do all of, but Denis does all of his Bitework now so I'm sure B will be fine.

Backup had great running blinds and a nice guard but then little by little it fell apart and then he was literally body slamming the helper repeatedly, we put too much faith in him when he was too young, so this is a huge improvement. Gary thinks he'll be 1 ready by the local trial but honestly we'll probably only have money for one 1 (for Sloan) and 1 BH.

He does seem to be balancing a lot lately though, Id love more flash in his obed but getting him this far was a struggle so I'm very happy with where he is.

Cool! He should pass his BH no problem.

Off topic, but how did you end up training weaves with your Mals? I remember you saying that you didn't like 2x2s with Backup.

I continued with 2x2 with both dogs. It's not without flaws and being a shaping method it is lacking for Backup but it worked extremely quickly for Sloan.

How about Panzer?

Well, I am totally over 2x2 training at the moment, lol. I know shaping is all the rage in agility, but I honestly don't like it that much. I don't like watching my dog fail as they try to figure out what the hell is going on, it makes me feel bad that they are trying their hardest and not getting anything. Pan was awesome at first, but is totally not grasping it as I try to slowly straighten the 4 poles. She'll get an idea stuck in her head and keep offering the same behaviour over and over.

I don't know, I guess I'm just frustrated with it right now, but I think I personally prefer to just show the dog what the expected behaviour is from the start. Like, my obedience was all taught Ellis style with luring with great results. Happy dog, happy human.

It doesn't help that I'm watching dogs at the kennel club (where I assist with agility classes) learning the weaves quickly with the channel method just going to class once a week.

She sounds a LOT like backup, he gets obsessed with the wrong option and it either frustrates me or stresses him out, he's not having fun, however when you show him the goal and he's happy to play. We got straight 6 but suddenly he backslid and now pops on 4 and spins back for a reward so we're back to slightly open and a manners minder. I have also been doing a bit of guiding though as well, maybe the combination will help. I've mostly been taking a break and just revisited it Thursday.

So are what are you trying? Any success? I feel the 2x2 pain. lol

I'm not too sure yet. I might give channels a try, but I don't have access to them all time, which sucks. I'll let you know how our next experiment goes.

I just love Backup. <3 I love his leg weaves. And Auggie says barking is TOTALLY a trick!

Payton and I are 2x2 dropouts also LOL.
