Hi, I'm new to this forum and have a behavioral question regarding my Corgi that I was curious about and thought maybe someone with some knowledge might be able to explain to me.
This morning while feeding Mabel my 3 year old Corgi, I slipped and fell pretty hard in the kitchen and her bowl shattered and food exploded all over the floor. I laid there for at least 15 minutes because I really hurt myself and couldn't move. My beloved, couldn't be found anywhere. She apparently ran into the bedroom and hid under the bed until I was finally able to get up, clean-up and found her cowering and shaking under where I could barely reach her. So much for "my best friend to the rescue"! Anyone know why she may have reacted that way as opposed to coming up to me, kissing me and "checking on me"? If anyone has any ideas, would love to hear it. Thanks. |

Because it was scary!
Some dogs react to things different, some wouldn't have been bothered by that and would have come to see why their human was laying around on the floor, others would have thought it was a game, some would have eaten the food while you were down for the count and some would react like your corgi and go hide because they were frightened either by you falling, the bowl breaking or all of it together. It doesn't mean your Corgi doesn't love you, just that she got scared and reacted to that.

My dogs would have been more concerned about eating as much as they could as fast as they could

My Corgi would have cleared the way of the falling bowl and then eaten all the food.
Mabel was scared, bottom line. Don't take it personally. There's this Hollywood idea that dogs are all out to please us, protect us, etc. The fact is that dogs are animals and they're out to survive. Especially Corgis. She was scared, she went and hid. That's really all that happened.

I'm pretty sure Fozzie would run off too. I'm not offended by that... I love and appreciate the fact that he's a dog who is all about self preservation, but I do think he'd recover after a few minutes and awkwardly come back to check on me. Corgis tend to get spooked, especially Pembrokes, as most are bred very soft these days.
I know my Border Collie would be freaked out for a second, then RUN over and try to lick my face to make it all better. He might attempt to dial 911 or find help. That does not make him a more caring or stable dog, he just has a different temperament. You can definitely desensitize your Corgi to loud noises and falling, so it doesn't freak her out! You can even train her to come to you in an emergency... some people even train their dogs to ACTUALLY call 911 for them. It's all about training and conditioning. Most dogs do not know what to do in scary situations, naturally, unless they've been exposed to those situations or trained to respond to commands.

You're lucky she didn't try to eat you when the food was gone, I'm sure mine would do that.

![]() ![]() Shortly after Matt got laid off a couple years ago his team had an ultra super massive kegger party. My sister was DD and I was relatively sober so when she took us home we stayed in the car talking for a minute. Matt (who was possibly the furthest from sober I've ever seen him) weaved and wandered his way up the sidewalk and somehow managed to unlock the door. He took two steps over the threshold and WHAM, went facedown on the floor, whereupon Murphy and Mu LEAPED on him and smothered him with kisses (and probably biting from Mu). I may or may not have been laughing too hard to do anything about it.

It was scary. One of my Chi's...Chulita would have probably gone off to get away. If I run into my coffee table, which I do with a fair amount of frequency, really hurt myself, cuss, increase the tension in my voice, she definitely gets nervous. Jose` would have eaten all the food up as fast as he could. He's not as scared about things like that. Toker, my son's dog who is frequently here, would have gone behind a chair to stay clear. Any kind of raised or scary voices, crying out, or chaos like that would give her flash backs of a scary childhood that she had, where those kinds of things were associated with the abuse she endured. She would have a worried expression and have her head lowered as she would hide behind something. My Doberman wasn't afraid of much. He might have come up to me to see what was going on, sniff and stick his face in my face. So, I don't think your Corgi's behavior was abnormal one bit. Dogs have different temperaments and reactions to things. I hope you're okay now and didn't have any lasting pain from such a fall.

I've dropped, knocked, kicked, and slid my guys metal dishes all over the floor (note, METAL, I highly suggest this when you get a new bowl, we have a ceramic bowl for water but they all eat from stainless steel), my dogs will "melt" at the sound, but heaven forbid someone drop FOOD in this house! No, your dogs reaction was just your dog being herself, my Corgi would have charged to the scene to sweep the floor, so would have the Mini Dachsie, my girl on the other hand, would have been as many rooms away as she could get, doing the same as yours, because that's her temperament, and she normally refused breakfast any how.
