Venison bags were not affected. The issue with the beef was that the bags were not retaining freshness like they should, they haven't released a specific cause.

Default My dog got sick from Nature's Variety Beef Kibble (?). Anyone else have a problem?

I just found this site after seeking information on the recall of Nature's Variety Beef Kibble. By sheer coincidence while looking for info on another brand of dog food, I came across the voluntary recall issued on July 12, 2012. I was a long term user of Nature's Variety Kibble - both Chicken and Beef varieties. I have been feeding my Havanese Nature's Variety for the past 7 years, since he was 1 yr old. I was told it was a premium quality dog food, with the highest quality ingredients. I was very pleased with how my dog grew and thrived on Nature's Variety, and felt satisfied I had made the right choice.

I purchased a 15 lb. bag of Beef Meal & Barley Kibble in mid-May 2012 from an online website (along with a 15 lb. bag of Chicken). I would rotate the varieties for my dog every other day. My dog was always a healthy eater. When I opened the new bag of Beef Kibble, I noticed an odd smell. Not sure if it was a new formula or not, I didn't think much of it at first. I fed it to my dog and he ate it. The next time I gave it to him, he went over to his bowl and sniffed, ate a bit and then walked away. I thought maybe he was bored of eating the same food for 6+ years. Still bothered by the odd odor, I called the company to complain. They were very receptive and told me to just throw out the bag and sent me a coupon for a replacement bag. I picked up a replacement bag a few days later from a local supplier, and again the same off scent. Not sure if it was the product or the packaging, I again fed it to my dog. Again he did not really approach his food with his usual gusto, but he did eat some. After a week of this, I stopped feeding him the Beef and just served the Chicken.

During the 2nd week of June 2012, my very healthy 7 yr old Havanese starting having diarrhea, loss of appetite and was just not himself. Fed him some homemade chicken and rice, but he didn't really improve. I took him to the vet a week later, and they assumed it was something gastro-intestinal, but every test - blood, fecal, xray - was negative. He was put on antibiotics but didn't respond. He was tested 4x within 2 weeks, and all tests were negative. His diarrhea worsened and he was finally hospitalized. His condition changed very suddenly and he started going downhill. My beloved dog died on July 19, 2012. We still don't really have a conclusive answer as to why.

I was never notified by anyone - not Nature's Variety who's site I'm registered on, the website I purchased the 1st bag from, nor from the local chain supplier of which I'm a club member - that the product I had fed by dog was recalled. Doesn't matter if it was voluntary, there was clearly something wrong with the product. Had I not accidently stumbled upon the 7/12/12 recall, I would have never known. Its not even listed on the FDA's pet food recall list.

I will be contacting the company tomorrow to see if I can learn more. Maybe its a coincidence that my active, healthy dog became suddenly sick at around the time his food was experiencing quality control issues. I still have the bag and will ask they test it further, and may do lab testing on my own to see if there's something more, even though the company says nothing was contaminated.

I wondering if any one else has had a dog with a GI problem that might be connected to eating Nature's Variety Kibble? I called the company twice to complain and they made it seem as if I was just unlucky to have purchased a "bad" bag, and that it was an isolated incident. I also question why no one - from 3 possible sources - ever communicated by email that there was a recall?

I will be pursuing this further and will let you know what happens.
