Default Coat color genetics buffs

Do you think Summer is urajiro? I don't know that the gene actually occurs in papillons but I've always thought she had interesting markings (less visible the more she greys).

I always thought that might be a good case for spitz being added in as I don't think any spaniels are urajiro. (true spaniels)

At first I thought no, but the more closely I look the more I see it--on her cheek maybe?

(also I love coat genetics, when I saw your title I was going OOOOOHHH)

I think thats normal spaniel coloring. I don't see why it would be considered a white mask is most of the dog is white with red spots. Thats a fairly common pattern in Springers and Brittanys.

It seems in the spitz types it usually refers to a white mask when the top of the dog, head through the back are a darker color.

I'm looking at the -cream- coloring on the dog's cheek... decidedly not white. Here's another pair of dogs with urajiro:

It's almost white in those dogs, but it takes a similar pattern to black and tan markings and even partially masks them in the black dog. It can be anywhere from cream to white.

I love genetics, but I've never understood what exactly urajiro is.

It's a kind of dilution of the red coloring on a dog, but in points, i.e. on the back of the tail as well as in places where tan points often show up.

Here's a very fake dog that better shows what urajiro is and where it can show up (though this doesn't cover all of it):

(also I feel kind of weird using that as an example but it's so hard to see on RL dogs sometimes oh well)

Yeah I'm talking about the cream on her cheeks. It's almost like a phantom tan point or something.

I was going to say no, but I tilted my screen to give more contrast and it does look like she has cream points. Interesting.

That's a great way to describe it.

And she is sable, not red and white. Mia's grandfather shows what most clear sables look like: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...ch&um=1&itbs=1

I've only ever seen the cream markings in Summer and then in Cran's dog, Crystal.
