Default Responsibility After 18???

Frustrating how the law works sometimes. If a child is 18 they are considered an adult? Obviously this is so because when my daughter went to the hospital they wouldn't release any information. But now we're being flooded with the bills from her medical care because she used our address...she's kind of drifting so doesn't have one of her own. But because she is independent of our insurance I can't even submit bills to them...she doesn't talk to us...the hospital stay was from a bad batch of something...

I suppose just write on the bills not at this address. But every time I see one, just a whole bunch of dreadful feelings there...A child is independent at 18 so they aren't required to notify you if they live or die...unless they list you as next of kin...but they still expect you to pay the bills...Uh. No.
Gah, thanks for letting me share

I hope she didn't give them your phone number or they will be calling you soon.
Hopefully your daughter will straighten up and come back a new woman. Kids can be our greatest joy and our greatest sorrow.

They can send you the bills, but i don't think you can be held responsible for them.

Thankfully, i stopped putting my mom through hell at about 17

It's worth a try. Somehow, we started getting hospital bills for someone else (we think it might be the idiot down the road). And, apparently they've gone to collection to boot. I simply wrote- "No such person at this address" and put them back in the mail. The end of the billing cycle should be coming up soon, so we'll see if it worked.

I had to do kind of the same thing with our oldest son- he used our address for a credit card, then the calls started coming. I told the person calling that our son didn't live here anymore, and I wasn't sure where he was (no lie, he and his wife had seperated, and he was "couch surfing" for awhile).

I have a pretty good "working knowledge" of the postal system. I'm not so sure that would work. BUT- going to the post office itself might accomplish something.

I thought of that, too, but think the daughter has to do it. Besides, Kaydee said her daughter is kind of drifting and doesn't have an address.

Just because the bills come there does not mean you are responsible for them. You can send them back or ignore them. It won't make a difference.
