Question fetch!

Hi all,

I'm Oryza and new to this forum. I hope to learn a lot from you all and hopefully I can contribute a little bit too!

I just got myself a new puppy (a Maltese) and though I know some of the rules, I seem to do all the wrong things.
Minka is about 11-12 weeks old and I chase her around. Yes, blush ! I always want to catch her doing her business & put her in her potty.
Now that I have a crate and made a play pen AND have her potty in the, ... yes, livingroom, I don't chase her around very much anymore, but ... she always runs away from me!

How do I "reset" her brain that I won't chase her anymore?
Minka is very intelligent and understood in 2 days where she had to go potty, even though there still have been a few accidents.

OK, that was my first question.
The second is : How do I see if a dog likes to please me and how do I take advantage of it to teach her things.
She's been with us for almost three weeks now. Of course she's playing all the time. She doesn't seem eager to "please" me, though.
Minka doesn't sit as easily as other dogs do. She prefers to walk backwards when I give her a treat in front of het nose and bring it above her head.
My third question has to do with the above : I wanted to teach her to fetch a ball.
It was so easy with our now two year old Spitz we call Poomy. He did it all by himself. Minka fetches the ball and goes playing with it somewhere else. Doesn't bring it back.
How do I teach a puppy that "fetch" means :"bring it to me"?

Well, those are the things that keep me thinking.

Thanks in advance for your advise!

CU!

Hi and welcome to the forum! Do you have pictures of your puppy?

For the sit part anyway, line her up so that her butt is facing the wall. That way when she goes to back up, there's only so far she can go and at some point she's going to have to sit.

Do you live somewhere with a yard or much grass? It's usually easier to get a dog housetrained if they know that outside is the place to go. Otherwise, your home becomes one big lavatory to them. It sounds like she's learned that to potty near you means bad things to her. You're going to have to untrain her of that, and the best way to do it is to start with a place that has no negative memories for her, like outside. Give treats and praise galore when she does her business outside and go nuts if she does it near you (but still outside).

To get her to come to you, find a treat that she just can't resist, like a piece of cooked chicken. Say "Minka! Minka come!" and make it sound like there is a huge party going on over by you. When she comes over, give her the treat and praise her like crazy.

Thanks Zoom,

Well, Minka was a bit ill when we got her. She was very thin, hardly ate at all.
She's OK now after 2 visits to the vet.
Its Freezing outside and she already shivers when I bring her to the garage, that's why her potty is here in te living room.
I hope to bring her outside ASAP.

Yes , I'll try to post a picture of Minka tomorrow and of her "potty" .

Hi todpuglover,

Nice to meet you!
I'll try to post some pictures here.

Hmmm, I'm new here. Don't know if I did it allright!
I made the "potty a bit too large for Minka, but it fits exactly in her potty in the garden
"oud manneke" is Minka looking like an old man.
