Default Hoping it wasn't a stroke.

First, I was hoping something wasn't cancer. (a past thread) Now, that's done and I'm hoping I didn't just have a stroke. Good grief!

Well, I saw the doc today to follow up on my emergency room visit the other night. He wants me to have an MRI to rule out an neurological issues like a TIA (transient ischemic attack) like a mini stroke. He thinks it may well have been dehydration and all that other stuff I told about in that other thread. But he doesn't have enough info because they didn't do a brain scan when I was in the ER...only a ECG, which was fine. So, now I have to have an MRI. Uggggggg. Have you ever had an MRI? I had one for my herniated disc and it is soooooooooooooooooooooo boring. lol. You can't move one single muscle until they're finished and it can take a long time sometimes. Now, if you're a fidgety person to begin with, like I am, it's very trying, let me tell you. So, I'm hoping I didn't have a stroke. If I did, I'd never notice. I'm so addled anyhow.

Do you drink a lot of diet pop? I know it sounds strange but when I was in nursing school they life flighted a supervisor out of one of our clinical spots because she had stroke like symptoms and one of the drs at the clinic blamed it all on the extreme amount of diet pop she had been drinking. She had passed out and BP dropped. Guess she had been feeling a bit off and stopped the pop and was fine.

Anyway-I hate MRIs! They scare me to death so boring they are not! Usually you can take a cd of music you like. Hopefully it will be quicker since its just your head he may be looking at.

And hopefully you were just dehydrated! Are you drinking water like crazy now?

I hate pop! LOL. and I am very careful what I eat. And normally, extremely conscious about drinking at least 64 oz of water a day. BUT....that one day, I think I didn't. I drank coffee (strong) then a couple alcohol drinks...not too much though. Very little food except for breakfast, tired from staying up till 3:00 karaokeing the night before, lol. I guess it could have been a combination. But the thing is, the bp was exceedingly low. 60 over 20 something, which is just flat out creepy. I went very dizzy, but not vertigo. Then basically passed out...well, in and out. But was completely with it mentally. (when I was awake) I mean, no confusion or impairment there. (at least not more than normal for me. lol) But he still wants to make sure there isn't something else. I'm hoping not, but who knows? Grrr.

Yeah, the guy on the phone when I just called for an appointment asked me if I needed to be sedated. And I said, "Why?.......no." And he said some people are claustrophobic and that can get to them big time. So, I assured him, I wasn't. Yeah, they make a clunking sound that is loud. I remember that and wearing ear protectors. Hopefully, it won't take too long...just my head. Hmmmm...a CD. Maybe I'll take my new Nina Simone CD. ROFLOL! I'd probably start singing and they'd say, "STOP MOVING!"

I had an MRI of my brain done last year to make sure I didn't have some rare neurological disorder. I am claustrophobic, and I wouldn't have minded if they twilighted me LOL, but they never offered! But I wouldn't have needed any "real" sedation I don't think. I got through it as it was by keeping my eyes closed 99% of the time and just doing a lot of deep breathing. The machine they used was the quietest one in the area, OMG, if THAT was quiet... plus it like, thumped a few times. And I could feel it, like somebody was thumping on my back almost.
Not pleasant but certainly not the worst medical experience I've ever had by any means! I think the worst part for me was knowing I couldn't move. That just made the claustrophobia worse. THERE IS NO ESCAPE AAAAAH
And of course AS SOON AS THEY START your nose starts itching LOL.

Anyway, hopefully it will be quick for you. I think it was 20 minutes for mine. And I hope your results come back with good news!

Oh Beanie! So, you've been through this too. That's weird they didn't offer to give you a little gin and tonic at least. lol. Yes, that thumping is something else again. Did you have ear protection? Yes, the nose for sure will start to itch....no escaping that. I learned early on in choir in school not to itch my face no matter what when we're performing. So, maybe I'll just go back to that in my mind. haha. Thanks for your nice reply. And I hope everything is all right with you too!

Hoping for the best. I have a hard time staying still for an MRI. I am way too fidgety and it seems like something always itches me when I have to stay still. I hope you get an appointment soon so you don't have to wait too long.

You have our thoughts and prayers that the MRI goes smoothly... and quickly and that there is nothing seriously wrong and a quick fix

Actually I think all they did was put headphones on me... I don't remember! They asked me if I wanted them to pull up Pandora or just a local station. Apparently a few days ago they had done an MRI for somebody where they listened to the Justin Bieber Pandora station the whole time... I just had them dial up one of the stations where I work so I could just try to zone out and pretend I was at work.
They do put you into this "football helmet" kind of thing, maybe that had some ear protection in it, I forget. That was pretty intimidating. You lay down on the back part of it, and the top of it comes down over your face like a cage almost. That was when I just closed my eyes and just tried not to think about it!

I should have asked for a drink LOL. I was putting on a brave face though. I'm very much a mind over matter person so by acting like I was totally calm, I felt pretty calm. I just shut my eyes and breathed and acted like it was no big, so for the most part, it really wasn't a big deal!

I've had an MRI when I was quite young and a few years ago. I know when I was younger they had to knock me out.

I found it hard to sit still in the MRI, mostly because you lay down and everything starts to itch and it drives you crazy because you can't itch the itch.

I do remember that they put ear muffs on my ears.

Good luck! I hope its nothing seriose and an easy fix. ***VIBES***

I have had Several MRI's over the years, and I have had 2 strokes. Make sure they put something (a cloth will do) over your eyes. Helped me a ton!! I just kept singing a song in my head during it. One I had was with contrast also, so the MRI was an hour long. OMG! I try to relax and almost sleep through mine. If I think about how long it is/still will be then I go crazy! Just take your mind off of the fact that you cant move.
