The squealing in excitement I could do without but I just tune it out after a while. Now, the ride home from the breeder's, Mia screamed bloody murder the whole way. That did wear on me after a while but mostly because it was a 6 hour drive. I don't think you could train Mia not to vocalize without squashing her or shutting her down to be honest. Quote:

Drives me up the WALL. Some barks really get on my nerves too - high pitched yips (from a Pomeranian, for example), the sound a bulldog/pit bull type dog makes when it barks (very distinctive and drives me NUTS), and any type of hound (other than a Basset) baying.
Course, in a home setting bark types don't typically matter much...but I work at a boarding facility, and my teeth are set on edge all day long by some dogs. I don't mind talkative dogs...I lived with a Malamute that would arroooooo and howl and grumble. Chloe does that too, and I would actually prefer that over a quiet dog. But barking? Not unless it is because someone or something is at the door, and even then you better STFU when I tell you to. Chloe hasn't gotten that memo yet (and it drives me NUTS), but she's gotten better. And like someone said earlier, you better not bark at ME (barking for attention) or because you want something or I will explode.

Talking is fine. Steve roops and rawrs and makes all kinds of silly noises, but straight up BARKING? No thank you please.
I am so glad Steve's not a vocal agility-runner. He alarm barks (more than I'd like, really), but I'll deal with that. The bullies don't say much. Well, Mushroom alarm barks, but otherwise they're pretty quiet dogs.

If barking/loud dogs annoyed me Traveler would be dead and gone. Honestly, he barks and makes a ton more noise than Kaylee but she barks out the window at nothing ALL THE TIME and I want to strangle her for it. Traveler alert barks if there is really something to alert bark at and only once or twice and then he finds me. But god does he make noises (barking, whining, moaning, groaning and something that is pretty darn close to talking) when he's happy, sad, frustrated or wants things.

*looks sideways over to Ivan*. I've learned to live with noisy a noisy dog. I do think he alarm barks too much. He sure there is something there that I must know is different. He has yet to learn, I don't care if the neighbors have moved something in the yard. In general he is just the noisiest dog we have ever had, he has a noise for just about everything.

Not really bothered by it as I am used to it with my dogs and the shelter dogs. Dixie is VERY vocal but I don't mind it. It's just who she is and she's hilarious.
![]() I looove the woo woo woo northern breed barks. Sooo cute. But honestly I cannot stand yippy barks, that annoys the heck out of me lol even when I love the dog!

l like vocal dogs. Barking at every single sound they hear is annoying, but I love dogs who grumble, moan, and make other noises.
When Millie is irritated she grumbles. A lot of people think she's growling, but she's not. I think it's adorable. Fable moans, whines, etc. all the time and even if she grows up being as noisy as she is now, I don't think I'll mind at all. ETA: Sometimes the barking does depend on the dog. My aunt had a yorkie/poodle mix whose bark could shatter glass. Loud and as high-pitched as a dog's bark could be while still within human hearing range. I couldn't bear to live with that dog, no matter how adorable she was.

It depends on what kind of vocal we're talking about... lol.
Jackson has a high pitched shrill alert bark that could scare the crap out of someone not expecting it and would probably annoy the hell out of most. I admit, it's not a great sound, but he's not excessive about it. It's literally just that... an alert bark. Someone walking in the door for example. But he shuts up real quick, either when he sees the person who is coming in and he knows them, or I tell him to be quiet. He can be a talker, and do grumbles, and moans and such. That I don't mind. I think it's funny - I like to talk back to him lol. The one thing we are working on is at my dads house (where things a lot more chaotic, two other dogs, two cats, young kids in and around, etc) so he's always more high strung over there and does tend to alert bark more at stupid things that he doesn't need to. But if it makes sense, I definitely wouldn't call him a "Yapper"... he just doesn't "yap" just to hear himself talk. He doesn't bark in the car, for example, if people/dogs walk by. He doesn't ever bark at other dogs on walks, at parks, or otherwise. So he's not a yapper, but certainly an alert barker. He barks when there's a reason to (sometimes that reason is stupid, but there's always some kind of reason, LOL).

Constant barking would drive me batty.
Neither of our dogs bark much, but Sally will whine if we have to shut her in the bedroom or something, and it sounds AWFUL. She makes what we have come to call "her skinned dog noises," because it sounds like someone is skinning her alive when she really gets going. Jack has a super annoying play bark. It's this high pitched hollering-barking sound he makes when he is trying to egg Sally into playing.
