Default Remember the Tiny House thread? Chaz helped me find my house!!!

We are breaking ground this summer on the two bedroom version of this plan:

http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/down...tudy_Plans.pdf

We are not putting the kitchen where it says though, instead we are making that an entrance/ porch and the whole great room kitchen/ dining, for the first year we will have a rec room in the basement as our living area, then next year we are building an addition off the back (where the 3 bedroom plan has the extra bedroom) for a living room!

Pretty excited, we are doing much of it off the farm, all the framing we are sawing ourselves, the floors are going to be cherry off the farm in the main areas, pine upstairs, the living room will be wainscoting with barn boards from the old barn, all the windows and doors are recycled from contractor friends and the basement is being done by a friend in trade for work, as well as the plumbing... It's going to be a fun challenge to see how cheaply we can build it with a focus on keeping the running costs down. We will heat with wood ( we have enough fallen trees on the farm we won't likely have to cut much) going to have propane stove/ hot water/ and dryer to keep electrical needs down so we can be as off grid as possible, possibly totally off grid...

We may not be totally off grid, an electrician buddy has advised he can run an underground line up too 500 feet from the shop and "steal" enough power to run the washer, fridge (expensive on propane) a few CFL fixtures and plugs for charging the cells etc, and one TV and receiver.

The rest will be propane with wood heat.

Thanks everyone, We hope to be in by next spring when my MIL will be moving here and renting the upper part of the house we are now in, my daughter and her hubby will continue renting the other half

Pictures will be provided! I may even take a few tonight of the "location"

Why are you trying to go off grid?

Cost? Environment?

I've read that most of Ontario's energy is Hydo, so skipping electricity to burn a fossil fuel isn't necessarily very good for the environment.

How awesome!

Have you looked into that heating system that runs water lines that store hot water underneath the floors?
