Default Is she or Ain't she

Ok big mystery here: I have a dog who apparently was in heat in Oct, but never allowed near a male dog. So she should not be pregnant however the vet gave an educated guess that she was. He could not feel anything but she would be about 4 weeks if she was. I am unable to spay her until after Christmas and if she is pregnant the pups should be born then. SO How the heck am I going to know if she is: here are her symptons so far:

1] swollen vulva was like then when she arrived and has not changed [she is most defanantly not in heat]

2] back two breasts are slightly swollen but not much [all nipples appear bigger then a normal dogs]

3] she has gone from friendly and gentle to rather bitchy and snappy.

I am thinking false pregnancy but really have no clue for sure so any insight would be good. If it is a case of we really think she is then I will search out a vet willing to spay earlier but finances are the issue right now too. THe rescue portion is getting rather expensive.

Forgot: Yukon who is neutered is showing great interest all of a sudden in the bum area of this female. SHe is ignoring him altogether. There is no possible way that she is in heat.

The Vet should have been able to tell during the examination by palpating the abdomen...strange that your Vet told you this and your sure your girl was never caught.

Where finance are the issue, ultrasound would of course be out of the question. It's tough to tell with some bitches, a friend of mine actually had an ultrasound done on one of her bitches and came back stating no pups. The girl gave birth to 5 puppies! even after confirming she was not pregnant with ultrasound...she could have been carrying up under the rib cage. Dogs that carry under the rib cage are hard to detect pregnancy.

She could be going into heat again, there is split heat and this happens...not often..but, it happens with young females. My female Tori had 4 heat cycles last year. In a split heat the female attracts the male and develops vulvar swelling and vaginal bleeding (in most cases - my female did not bleed for one split heat)...They will go through proestrus, but will not proceed to estrus....she will come into a split heat and out with out being responsive to the male...and can be...bitchy and moody. A second heat follows this 1st inconclusive heat about 2 - 10 weeks later. Most times this happens in young females due to lack of pituitary output of LH...once the female matures the heat cycles become more structured and normal.
So, maybe the first heat your female had was a false heat, and now she is going into a normal heat...perhaps. The female can be bitchy up until they are in estrus (which happens once they stop bleeding). Some females may have a silent heat and not bleed at all. My female Tori bleeds very little during her heat cycles.

Any how, I hope your baby is not pregnant...if she is, all you can really do this far along is have the litter (hopefully it's not a big litter) and find responsible homes for the pups. The pregnancy usually lasts about 63 days from the day conception happens. Good luck. I have heard of people having their dogs spayed while pregnant...it can be risky. These dogs were spayed while pregnant unbeknowist to the owner and the dog pulled through fine. Some people do say it's a risk.

Thanks alot for responding the thing is that we bought her for the intent to breed with ourselves if everything went according to plan. SHe was just coming out of her heat then. THe lady claimed that she lept her kenneled the whole time and I have no reason to doubt that, however the morning that we picked her up she was with all the other dogs, male included. SO who really knows for sure.

SHe is 2 years and 3 months so not her first heat for sure.

If she is then she has to be about 4 weeks possibly 5 weeks not anymore for sure. The vet did feel her tummy and stated he felt nothing but it could be abit soon or she could be a rib hider. However based on her vulva swelling and slight, very slight breast swelling he said educated guess was yes pregnant. We have decided to spay her but I cannot get her into the vet clinic before the end of December because he is booked, by then if she is pregnant the pups will be here.

She is always licking her self so no sign of discharge at all. We really are not sure how far along she would be because of she is it happened before she came here.

Usually a clear of white sticky discharge is a good sign that she is pregnant

Maybe she is not then because I have not seen that although she does lick herself alot.

Also I just sat down with a calendar she would be at least 5 weeks and likely starting her 6 th week possibly even her 7th week. So I think maybe it is a false preggy because she is not big enough she is still trim through the belly. SHe is jsut starting to eat her supper something she never did before but they fed her once a day and I feed twice a day so she may just be getting use to our schedule and settling in with us. I guess our best bet is to wait and see what happens. THanks I will keep ya all posted though.

My mentor who has been breedign for years and years came over and palpated her, he felt nothing and he suggests that it is likely a false preggy. He wants to pay for the scann and have her checked so that will help in this mystery alot.

It sounds like a false pregnancy. But keep us updated.
