We have a seven month old Basset hound and he stills has the occasional accident inside. We are doing everything right:
-Positive reinforcement and treats -Lots of praise for going outside, etc..... He goes outside and goes to the bathroom with no problem, but he still has accidents. It's really frustrating. Any ideas? Has anyone else had this problem? |

it's not a breed related thing at all.
![]() i suggest taking him outside more frequently and keeping notes on the exact times he goes, regardless if it is an accident or in a "proper place". also take note of the times you are feeding or he is drinking large amounts of water. within a few days you should see a pattern and be able to prevent any accidents.

What Mordy said.
But Bassets can be very stubborn as I'm sure you've found out by now. My friends have a basset that's around a year and he still has the occasional accident even though he knows he's housetrained.

Thanks for your advice. Yes, we've learned to read his signals and when we're home and watching him we know when to take him out. He definately knows he should go outside and is about 95% potty trained. However, he just has an accident every week or so. It's just frustrating because all the dogs I've had in the past were so easily trained. I am just wanting to make sure we are doing everything right.... sigh....

ive also been told bassets are very difficult to potty train...when oakley stayed at a kennel (well, it was someone's house that he was free to run around in
) he made friends with a basset...when we went to check up on him, they were playing together, and the basset peed all over my foot...the dog was lik 5 yrs old, lol..anyways, so yeah, that guy told me that

We had a Bassett when I was a kid- it was VERY hard to potty train. He just didn't get it. Of course, we didn't know what we were doing either. My boss at the time had Bloodhounds and Bassetts, and she said they were both difficult to house train.
