Default Now I can't focus, so I'm gonna vent.

About a year ago I had an interview for a job that I REALLY wanted... the job description sounded 100% like me and my skills. It was at an advertising and marketing place, so they did agency stuff for people as well as graphic and web design and stuff. It was perfect. The interview went really well although about halfway into it the woman turned to the man (I was interviewing with the owner and the business manager both) and said "should we talk about why we don't want a graphic designer for this position?" Whomp whomp...
But regardless of that, we all got along SO well. It seemed like completely the right fit. They even took me around and introduced me to all the other employees (only about ten people.)

but they ended up giving the job to somebody else.

It's been a year and I still can't get over not getting that job. I wanted it SO bad and sometimes I still go looking at their website to see if they're hiring for anything else.

Well, I just discovered that the business manager is Facebook friends with several of my co-workers, and apparently is pretty close with at least one of them.
I suppose I should feel relieved that she didn't let slip to any of them that I had been in her office interviewing. But instead I'm even more upset. Why?? Why didn't I get the job?? I was the right fit. We have mutual friends! We have connections! Shouldn't that have been bonus points? Isn't that how you're supposed to do things... you have connections and I get a break because we both know the same people? Or maybe being friends with radio people was a negative, I guess, haha.

I just don't understand. and I'm so frustrated right now even though this was a YEAR ago that I didn't get this job. seriously, out of all the jobs I've applied for, this is the only one I can't just put in the back of my mind and forget about. I just want to throw a temper tantrum.

I really don't want to have to move to Chicago, but it's looking more and more like that's the only real option here. And I have no idea how that's going to work. How do you just... start working somewhere two hours from where you live? There would be a time period in there that would be completely unfair to the dogs. They would probably go live with Auggie's breeder for a little while because I can't just leave Payton with my dad without me around unless I want him completely ruined.
so. frustrated.

that's all I got I guess. >=|

I would be upset too. The only way I could get over something like this is to think about the person who did get the job. Maybe they were the boss's daugher, or niece. Maybe they had more mutual connections. Unfortunetly, there's no way to find out. If you felt like you were a good fit, odds are they felt it too, so to me the only explanation is that the other person was an even better fit somehow.

Maybe send them a letter and say "Even though it's been a year, I still think about how your office is still my idea of a perfect working environment. I am considering expanding my job search to Chicago and was wondering if you happened to have any leads on similar positions there?"

That way you're complimenting them on having such a great place, subtly expressing your disappointment over not getting the position (and who knows, maybe the person they did hire isn't working out so well right now and that letter will make them go "You know, she was such a great choice, let's give her a call") and finally, seeing if there is a way to make use of those ever-important connections.

((((HUGS)))) I wish I could help.

I still have the same feelings about one job, as well. I do love my current job, but this other job paid better, had super friendly staff, really laid back cool atmosphere, and was in the other field that I loved. They considered me. Three times. For three different jobs. Each time I was nudged out by someone sliiiiightly better.

The worst part?

They're down the road from my pet store. I see them EVERY DAY. Growl.

They do canvas printing, so I kind of want to start establishing a client relationship with them anyway. It might lead to something a ways down the road, who knows?

Always, always, ALWAYS ask for feedback. Always.

I like zooms idea though.

So they ended up hiring somebody who didn't have any creative skills at all. This was I believe #2 that gave me the "you're too creative."

It sucks, Beanie. I got nothing. There was one of those for me several years ago, the Highlander Center. I got called in for an interview solely because the director loved my resume and how I wrote, but the rest of the board was looking for a party-person. I ran in to the director years later at the writing workshop and she told me I was better off not getting the job as the center really got away from their original goals.

Still . . .

What a world, where you get told you're too creative for a job like that. WTF???

yeah, I've been given the "you're too creative" three times. Once was coupled with "and also overqualified." The last one also sucked because they ran an ad for a position, then when I went in to interview for it, they told me a completely different set of job tasks. I was really confused because it didn't seem to match up with my skillset at all (which the original ad did.) and even more confused when I STILL got called back for a second interview. It was in the second interview that the department head told me they had actually changed the job description after they ran the ad. That was why none of the job tasks were matching up with what was originally ran, and why I ended up being too creative and overqualified. I was right for the ACTUAL ad. For what they changed it to, not so much.

I just don't understand why if you don't want a graphic designer for this position why you would even ask a graphic designer in for the interview. I don't like having my time wasted... and if you know you don't want a graphic designer, why are you wasting YOUR time interviewing me? that was seriously one of the worst interviewing moments of my life, especially because my portfolio was sitting next to me underneath another copy of my resume. I casually reached over and put my hand on the portfolio and then I pushed it off the table. It was really funny but inside I felt horrible.
