Spend some time after importing your photos and rate them. Then create a smart album for all your 2 or less star photos and delete them every couple of weeks.

I also create a new album for every year and move the previous year's album to a portable drive....it keeps the load on my computer manageable.

That is good advice. I think I might be asking for an external harddrive for my birthday... Hmmmmmmm...
