Baby Guppies!

So I moved my guppy fry from the breeder net to their own 3.5 gallon tank until they get big enough to go into the community tank.

Ignore the green on the filter, I put white panty hose around the intake so it wouldn't suck up the babies (I think they're big enough not to get sucked up, but I just want to be careful) and I've been dealing with some algae in that tank. I had just stirred up the rocks and done a water change to prepare for the fry, right before putting the panty hose onto the intake, and apparently there was still a bit of algae in the water, since the panty hose turned green. LOL!

It's a bit bare for now, but I just had to take a plant from my community tank, since I didn't have anything on hand, really.

I love these little fish. They're flipping adorable! And I feel really attached to them since I rescued them from being eaten quite a while ago, and I've been able to just watch them grow from tiny little things to this!

....guess what? Yesterday my female Guppy looked like she was about to POP so I put her in the breeders net, just to see what would happen. 3 hours later we had TWENTY-FIVE baby guppies (at least). They're so adorable and tiny! I hope to keep several and give the rest away on craigslist and to petsmart. I did NOT expect for her to have them right then, it was crazy. At first I was like "What's all that stuff in the water?" and then I refocused and realized they were tons of BABIES!

This might be dating me a bit, but there is a story in Henry Huggins where he buys some guppies from the pet store and ends up with massive amounts of guppies breeding and breeding and breeding... canning jars full of guppies taking over his bedroom floor... and that's all I can ever think of when I hear "guppies," LOL.
(Does anybody still even read Henry & Ribsy books anymore? I feel incredibly old now.)

But they are cute little things!! You can already tell which is male and female? That's awesome!

I have (at least) six Endler's fry right now in my tank... They're still not big enough to be safe from the killifish though.

I loved Henry and Ribsy. I have a picture I drew of Ribsy laying around somewhere.


Also, I forgot, I used to have quite a lot of guppies. As in about four ten gallon tanks and several five and two gallon tanks. I loved having them, but man, they will NOT stop breeding. It's rather hard to separate them all out and keep them from interbreeding. I ended up giving them all away when I had too much inbreeding going on and they were having deformed babies. :/

My friend had a guppy tank in college. She just planted it heavily and didn't bother trying to save the fry when they were born. A suprising number of them were able to hide in the plants until they were big enough to join the community, most of the time WE didn't even know they were there. Just one day *poof* there would be another adult guppy swimming around.

Yeah, thankfully my tank's not that heavily planted, so after this batch of babies, I probably won't try put the mama into the net when she's having them, and hopefully I won't end up with too many more. xD
