Thumbs down Ugliest dog contest

I just saw they awarded another dog for the ugliest dog contest.

Is it just me or does others see this and just breaks your heart. Most of these dogs have serious health issues, like one pug had a severe eye infection or glaucoma, not sure what was going on but it look painful. Even the newest little guy has some eye problems. Most have teeth problems.

Even without the health issues, I hate this tittle. Poor dogs, they all have their own specific beauty, weather it's the looks, charm.

I can't help to tear up when seeing this on the news.

I can't say I'm a fan. I thought they added a vet check requirement?

They do? I don't know, but that Pug's eye doesn't seem healthy.

Sorry, tried to post the picture of Hercules but it's just not working.

I saw that :/

I thought it was terrible, and I think every dog can be cute, whether because of their personality, or maybe they are so ugly they're cute.

Here's a better link of pictures. Just scroll down to Hercules. And what's wrong with that poor APBT, Lucille? Did poor breeding cause her to have such a horrible skeletal deformation?

My biggest problem with it is that anyone who has heard of Chinese Crested dogs have heard of them because of this. So people are only used to seeing absolutely nasty looking ones and think they are all ugly.

Most of the Cresteds/Crested mixes who have won these competitions are pretty old. IME As a breed, they don't seem to age well especially the poorly bred ones. They are prone to skin issues, many end up totally toothless and old dog muscle wasting because extremely obvious with them. I don't really see a problem with these competitions. The dogs generally seem loved and well cared for, despite their sometimes rather creepy appearance. I think the Pug should probably lose his other eye too but there could be a reason they haven't had it removed, such as he's a high risk for surgery.

I hate the Ugliest Dog Contest... it makes me really sad

WTF is up with Ratdog's quote?

Ratdog is a 14-year-old deaf rescue mutt who eats onions, garlic and anchovies on his pizza.

It makes me nauseous, but I hope that it's a way for those that own a dog a little less glamorous than the rest can still celebrate and be proud of their dogs.

As for health issues related to their looks, it would really make me feel better if any illnesses/injuries were not poor breeding related, and if all the dogs were rescues I think that would be best. Wishful thinking perhaps.

I don't know. I always take it as a celebration of all dogs . . . even the ugly ones. The winners almost always seem to be strays and rescues, and well loved at that.

I think its a good idea to have the idea raised in peoples minds that even ugly dogs are worthwhile . . . and that its possible to be so ugly that you're cute.
