Default Gentle Leader Info

I didn't want it getting lost in the old thread, so I made a new one. And it's not Doberman-specific, so it can be applied to all dogs.

Hi ya!!
I use the head lead and that works wonders and he doesnt mind the lead over his head and it stops him pulling!!
We had Milo when he was 3 years old and now he is 8 coming 9 years old and ever since we had him its been a nightmare to walk him. Ever since last year i found the easy lead and tried it on him its the best lead out and it does harm him.And now i can walk him anywhere i like and how long for, instead of pulling me all the way and i cant wait to get back home!!!

Not to condone your experience with a gentle leader/halti, but the article is actually against its use. I haven't had time to read the article in its entirety, but from what I have read it does make some valid points.

I am sorry I don't agree with the article. I have a very loving, respectful relationship with my dog who does use the gentle leader when walking. He is not depressed when wearing the leader. He is so excited and happy because we are outside. The reason I use it is because he pulls. I think he pulls because of the anticipation and excitement of the walk. He doesn't do it because we have problems within our relationship. I don't beleive in off leash walking in my neighborhood because you just never know what can happen. I think if you make your dog wear it all day and abuse any type of training equipment thats a problem. In the perfect world we would have perfect dogs and perfect owners, but that is not ever going to happen.

That's a well thought out and expressed article. I hadn't read it before, never having a need to think about resorting to that sort of thing. I do, however, have a strong affinity for using the old fashioned shoulder harnesses, especially with puppies. There's no stress on the neck, since the dog is essentially controlled by evenly distributed pressure along the chest and shoulders. They also don't seem to want to pull using the harness like they sometimes do with a collar. But then, with my bunch, if they wanted to drag me down the road, there wouldn't be anything I could do about it. As it is, they've learned to be well mannered enough on leash that I've even been known to take both girls out together. You should see the looks THAT gets! lol
