De-wormer?

So Teagan is due to be de-wormed.

I bought this de-wormer called Sergeant's vetscription WORM-AWAY IV

and wondering if any of you guys have tried it?

I've used wormers like it before. It's basically pyrantel pamoate. It works just fine but FYI will not kill tapeworms.

Do you know for certain Teagan needs to be wormed? I usually drop off a sample for a fecal float and if one comes back positive I go ahead and worm them all.

Well the only reason I might be de-worming her is that she is a country dog. She is in contact with mice and other rodents ect ect.. Its been suggested that Emme has worms so thats why I am thinking about de-worming.

This de-wormer says it will kill tapeworms, hookworms, whipworms and the pills are Mebendazole tablets.

Mebendazole is broad spectrum as far as what it kills but I'm pretty sure it doesn't do tapeworms. Usually we use Praziquantel for tapeworm.

If your dogs are hip deep in worm country you might try just feeding them food grade diatomaceous earth a few times a week with their normal food. It's a nice physical worm killer, very safe, and cheap.

Pyrantel pamoate WILL kill tape. It might depend on tape species, but it was the only thing that killed the tape here. After a while of dealing with tape, getting stuff from the vet etc.

A double dose of pyrantel pamoate done a few times in succession did what nothing else would. Though we never saw fleas so I am wondering if its a different tape than typical.

For horse tape its advertised as killing it.

pyrantel pamoate is one of the safest deworming agents you can use, so I would go for it. If you think there is tape (and its not getting it) you can always go to your vet.

ETA that de wormer is not pyrantal pamoate. Its Piperazine. Which I believe is very limited in what it kills.

and it adverts it does tape as it has Praziquantel so between the two it should be broad spectrum and safe.

I wouldn't randomly worm without proof of a worm type. Some meds do better than other for specific worm species.. some require larger doses.

I had the unending tape issue for a year and a half. Evidence of tape, go to the vet get drugs, kill worms, reinfested in a month to three months.

I picked up exodus and dosed them myself. Finally broke the unending issue.

Yah on the back of the package it says the de-wormer kills roundworms, Hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms.

Although it does not say exactly whats in the tablets all it ways is they are Mebebdazole tablets.

I think I will call my vet tomorrow and see how much they charge to test for worms in a stool sample. And go from there.

IF there is visible tape segments you will see it. (looks like grains of rice).. Other worms you will need a fecal float, though not all poop samples will necessarily show shedding eggs depending on the worm, the infestation load, and the predominant life cycle.
