Default lens?

Ok I have a Nikon D40x. I have the basic lens for it. I know very little about this camera lol. I use it exclusively on auto mode

I would like to get a zoom lens.

anything you would recommend?

I have the 55-200mm zoom lens, and it's GREAT. I love it. Good luck!

By 'basic lens', I'm guessing you've got the 18-55mm zoom?

If that's the case, the 55-200 is a good companion to it. It'll give you some extra reach and from what I've heard, it's a very decent performer.
