Default I need advice regarding a stray

I woke up about 4:00 this morning to the sound of howling and thought maybe there was a coyote in our yard. I went down to the garage and looked out the back door and there was a young (looks to be about a year old) dog on the patio, howling and barking up a storm. As soon as he saw me, he took off.

I had Baloo out this morning, and there he was again, in the neighbor's yard. But again, he took off.

About 2:00 this afternoon, I took my son to work, and when I got home, the security patrol vehicle was at the top of my driveway, and I see the dog on the porch in Baloo's old kennel. The dog had been howling like he wanted in the house, and my wife didn't know what to do, so she called security. She stayed on the porch with the dog until security got there and then they coaxed him into the kennel. So I helped the security guard get him loaded into the back of her SUV. While I was out, I had picked up a bag of food because I was going to feed him if he came back. So I gave that to her also.

The poor dog is skinny but not emaciated, so I don't think he's been roaming around alone for too long. I'm thinking either someone moved out and left him behind, or someone who knows the gate code brought him here and put him out.

He had no collar or tags, so I put a collar on him. He seems very lovable but we couldn't get him to eat anything. I don't know if he's sick or just afraid. So, he'll be spending the night in the maintenance building, out of the cold. The security guard is new and she didn't know what their next step would be.

Now I feel responsible for the little guy. I'm kind of a softie when it comes to animals and I don't want to see him put down. I was thinking maybe I should just go get him tomorrow and take him to the vet. How do I get myself into these situations?

I don't even know what breed he is. He looks just like fellow boardie, MH<3dogs', Hannah.

What do you all think? Baloo has been like king of the mountain his whole life and I don't know how he'd take to having another dog in the house.

I'd appreciate any opinions.
Thanks
John

Call the local vets, feed stores and police department. Tell them you found a dog, and his description. Also, do you have a dog warden/animal control officer? If so, call them first. They should be able to pick him up, and, hopefully have access to a scanner to see if, by some miracle, he's chipped. If you don't have an AC, find out if any vets in the area can scan him. Again, if no AC, put a "found" ad in the paper, but don't give a total description of the dog. Leave something out that only his owners would know about (it's very possible he's new to the area and got out but can't find his way home). As far as where to keep him- if you think Baloo won't like having him around, I'd let him stay in the maintenance building.
