I did. I couldn't get my d40 to do it beforehand. I think it's fine. Just take a picture with a lot of contrast, and then desaturate it.

I would imagine it'd be fine if your camera has no other option. If your camera does have a good B&W option, definitely use it. When you're shooting in B&W versus colour, it makes composition choices, ISO, and other things all VERY different than in colour!

Yeah, if you need to shoot in color and then change to black and white that is fine
