Default Someone tell me I'm crazy...

So....

There's this stray cat by my house. There's actually a LOT of stray cats, but this one in particular likes to hang out on my porch. I've been a bad girl and offered him food on occasion, but more than anything, he wants attention. He won't eat if I'm offering pets. And I've only fed him 2 or 3 times over the past 8 months. Whenever I pull into my driveway, he comes running, stands on the porch, and then meows when I go inside

Well...I'm thinking of fostering him and finding him a home. I'll only be in this place for another month, so it's now or never. I love this cat to bits, but I can't really have a cat at this point. Gavroche isn't a fan of cats (unless they're not moving). Logan ADORES cats, though. I'm moving back in with my parents in a month, and they have 2 cats already.

I've been around stray cats all my life. I've never wanted to take them in, not really. But there's something about THIS cat that makes me feel horrible every time I close the door on him. He's the sweetest cat ever, and I hate to see him go through another winter outside.

My plan, for fostering, is to get a crate (I have two extras at my parents' house, or I may get a smaller one for him) and put a small litter box in it, bedding, food and water. And keep him until I find him a home. I would be willing to bet that if I still have him once I move in with my parents, my mom will want him. She has a thing for orange male cats. She already has two. Our second cat we got last winter, and he was a stray. He kind of forced himself upon my mom lol.

So, I could leave him outside and try to forget about him, I can foster him...

...or I can keep him.

Hey now, I saw that.

You might, at the very least, have him scanned for a chip. Some cats get themselves horribly lost, and though the chance is slim, he just may have some heartbroken owner out there who's given up all hope.

And if he has to come with you...well, so be it! What do you call him?

I saw that too.

That said, Albus is a big orange cat, and he sucks

He's the biggest jerk we've ever had in a cat, but he earns his keep by (occasionally) being a bit affectionate and leaving us dead rats all the time.

Albus did just fine in out apartment with two dogs and his litter box in the living room. He started demanding to go outside after awhile though, so I don't know about making him a strictly indoor cat, if all he's known is the outside though.

You people are no help at all.

I'm going to bring home a dose of Revolution tomorrow to put on him before I bring him in the house, because he's covered in fleas and I really, really don't want fleas. Logan got Frontline and Gavroche got Revolution a week and a half ago, so they should be good. My roommate's dogs should be on Frontline...she gets it free just like I do, so if they're not on it it's not my problem :P

I think to start with I'm going to let him out during the day and take him in at night. I was going to get him scanned today but when I went back out to get him, he was gone again. Once I have him in the house I can just take him whenever.

Are you sure he is a stray and not just a neighbora cat?

I feed several neighborhood cats who would rather hang out on my porch than their own home, but they do have homes, they just hang out here. My next door neighbors have more cats then us and they have gotten a few neighborhood cats fixed because even though their owners do feed them and generally care for them, they were irresponsible and allowed them to reproduce.

He's pretty beat up. He's got fleas (which is why I put Revolution on him), he's dirty and greasy and oily, and quite thin. I am going to scan him for a chip (I didn't feel on under his skin, and like I said he's pretty thin so it should be easy to feel, but I'll still scan him). I'm fairly certain he's a stray. We have SO MANY cats around here. One night I counted 17 cats I could spot just from my back door. Some are obviously cared for. Others are obviously not. There is actually a city ordinance that states Scats must have a collar on them when outside, or they are considered stray and can actually be picked up by animal control (not that they ever do, but they could if they wanted to). So he's also legally a stray.

I just put the Revolution on tonight, so I'll give it 24 hours before I bring him in. I was bad and gave him an egg again :P
