Default Is this a good site to find breeders?

Is this a good site to find good breeders?

Dog Breeders, Puppies for Sale, Dog Breeds Information

I'm not looking for a breeder or anything, but I found that site and wondered what you guys think of it.

Generaly sites like that are not. Stick to AKC/CKC breeder referals (or other REPUTABLE orginization depending on your breed/sport) or breed clubs.

I don't think that is the best site to find breeders, but that site is better than Hoobly, NextDayPets, etc. I see some evidence of showing and health testing in some of the ads. It's probably possible to find a good breeder, but that wouldn't be my first choice for breeder searching.

A good way to look for breeders is to look up the breed on the AKC site. Click on the particular breed, and look for the link to the breed club. The breed club usually has good referrals.

I assume CanKC has the same, but I've never been to that site.

Some breeders claim they did health testing when they actually didn't, so you can check up on some of it here: Orthopedic Foundation for Animals

a lot of junk breeders are members of breed clubs. so if you go to the website for the breeder you need to look health testing. then you can check the certs on line to verify they did in fact do the health testing claimed.

This is true with any site or breeder listing. Yeah its great to ask about health certs. Ask if they can show you (scan and email) the testing results. Remember that OFA site isnt allways UTD. Just because a dog isnt on there doesnt mean its not done.

Yep, good point. As a starting point, though, it's a good site.

I use that site a lot, I've actually found some really good breeders there. As with any site you must know most breeders you see are going to be bad so you need to go through there website with a fine toothed comb and any questions that are not answered can be answered through e-mail or over the phone.

As a starting point that site is probably one of the better ones. Honestly I'm not against those advertising sites... there are a lot of junk breeders on them but you can find good ones too.

I've found plenty of breeders I would not consider going to using AKC/breed club referrals. Ultimately you still have to look for the right things and ask the right questions, regardless of how you find a breeder.
