I can’t help but smile when I think of how drastically life changed nearly five years ago, when this tiny black and white bundle of fur bounded into our lives. You caught hold of my heart strings, early on, before I had even opened your cage at the SPCA and it didn’t take long before you had hook, lined, and sinkered Mit, too.

Oh, my Buddy. How I love you so. You’ve not been gone long and I can already feel the ache in my heart. Your absence is magnifying... Banzai is laying at my feet, Bella curled between Mit and I- we miss you already.

You were the life of the party. You let everyone know when it was time to play, when it was time to eat, when it was time for everyone to pay attention to you and you let the whole neighborhood know when I arrived home from work. Don’t tell Banzai or Bella, but that was one of my favorite parts of the day- when I pulled into the driveway and before I was even out of the car I could hear your high pitched bark ringing through the neighborhood. Nobody can beat that homecoming and I can’t tell you how happy I am that I was able to hear that one last time, yesterday, when I got home from work. No matter how sick you were, you still did the things that made you Buddy.You gave your last day on earth your all. You ate one last meal, you played in your pool, you chased your ball and you loved with all that you are.

You taught me long ago that life was worth fighting for and I was ready to go to bat for you again, Buddy, but I told you just yesterday, that it was okay for you to go. Probably the hardest words I have ever formed and spoken, but I needed you to know that it was okay- that I needed you to be okay and that I would be okay if it was your time. Some things are worth fighting for, but sometimes we need to know when to bow out gracefully and this morning you again taught us one of life’s greatest lessons- how to bow out gracefully and say goodbye.

There will never be another Buddy. There will never be another dog like you- you taught Banzai how to fetch (okay, so he’s not mastered the whole concept- he’s a work in progress) you taught Bella had to beg (and she’s put her own twists on it, she’s quite good) and you taught me what it’s like to really love a dog. There is a special place, a 90lb lab/dane/pointer/maltese paw print sized place, forever etched into my heart. You took root 5 years ago and I will never, ever forget you. Rest in peace, my Buddy Boy. Run free at the bridge, enjoy a life free of all that ailed you on earth and know that every time there is rainbow, I will look to the heavens and thank God for you and that special place you now reside, the Rainbow Bridge.

Buddy has always been one of my favorite chaz dogs, and your love for him shined through in all of your posts. This isn't fair at all. He went way too soon.
