Correct. And nowadays, thanks to DNA, the sire/sires of the pups can be determined.

Yes, unlike humans that release one egg to be fertilized, dogs release multiple eggs possibly on different days. If a dog breeds with a border collie today, those eggs will be fertilized by the border collie sperm. If that same dog releases eggs tomorrow and breeds with a boxer then those eggs will be fertilized by boxer sperm. Hence a mixed litter of border collie sired puppies and boxer sired puppies. Although, it is my understanding that one egg can't be fertilized by both boxer and border collie sperm.

That's what I've understood too and it would have been too confusing to answer Manchester.....so to add now to the confusion... Dam : Golden Sires : Golden and a Lab .... puppies : pure golden long hair (gold) , pure black ( 1/2 golden 1/2 Lab ) yellow/gold short coat 1/2 golden 1/2 lab.

I don't get that. But, maybe it's because I am flighty. I don't know. But I have always found it interesting that a bitch can get impregnated by two different dogs.

If you take a golden bitch--100% golden and she mates with a golden and a yellow lab then you get glodies and you get Mixes.

So 1/2 golden & 1/2 yellow lab

I think means 1/2 the puppies are goldens and 1/2 are yellow labs [mutts]

Yes, you are right. Just remember 1 sperm fetilizes 1 egg. Dogs release multiple eggs, so there could even be more than two sires depending on timing!!
