Default were getting chickens!!!

weve been planning this for about 3 yrs now...

my mum REALY wants a couple of chickens, checked ordinances and put lots of thought into time, breeds and maintenence and last year decided we were going to go for it...
then like many other things in life things got too hectic and nothing moved forward.
well mum brought it up a couple of weeks ago, that she wants her hens this year!

so im currently looking up coop designs, trying to figure out the best way to do this. weve got the breeds picked out and a place to get them from, we'll be getting extras due to shipping of young chicks but they will end up rehomed...
hopefully, the chicks will be comming home the end of march, and if the weather co-operates, coop will be built and chicks will be moved out to the coop at 4-6 weeks...

they wont realy be MINE of course as when i move mum keeps them shes picked them out ect...this is her little project realy, but the planning stuff has fallen on me and im quite excited about it

so does anyone else have hens?!

we will only be having hens, were not alowed roosters in our zoning.

well we ordered them!

were getting 11
2 of each of the following plus 1 "suprise" chick
australorp
barred rock
buff orphington
columbian rock
speckled sussex

and "mystery chick" could be many things but im kind of hoping itll be eaither a wyandotte or a easter egger...in which i might be tempted to keep it too lol

but at least 5 of the 11 will be finding new homes.
the coop will be big enough overall for up to 8 hens, but were only supposed to have 5 in our zoming so we'll see.
my sister realy wants silkies too lol.

we asked for delivery for the week of the 28th, itll depend on hatch rates, but yay.
today we decided on a final design for cassa del cluck cluck, and now i jus tneed to put a materials list together.

tomorrow i think im going ot do some driving, to the tractor supply and the larger agway near-ish to us (the one agway close doesnt carry anythign poultry related) and take a look, need to price up feed and shavings and bits and bobs needed...

if you couldnt tell, im excited.
add to this theres visible buds on the trees and the crocus and tulips are popping their leaves out and the weather was lovely today (after a week of rain lol) so im feeling "spring like"

How cool foxy!

I have three hens, a buff and two bramas

They are so much fun and so trainable. Iam sure you'll like them...I'd like to have more but Iam afraid the neighbors will complain (they aren't exactly legal here )

Iam assuming you are going to raise the little guys inside at first?

Default the chicken saga begins

so on thursday we began clearing out the area thats going to be used to put the coop and the run, theres about 500 sqft behind the shed thats going to waste, about 100 sqft of that is relitivly flat but has been used as a collection ground for various peices of wood, junk, paint cans and other such yickyness.

thursday begin the clean out...
friday finnished it...
yes there was that much stuff. me and mum worked out butts off shifting everything by the wheelbarrow full...
man i was aching...
then this morning we whent to tractor supply where we picked up a chainlink dog run...its supposed to be 10x10 however with some modification and the fact its going to ahve one wall made up of the shed and coop, we have enough peices to make it 10 x 15...
so that meant digging, LOTS of digging, see we live on a giant sand dune and while some of the area was good to go after removing the stuff, we had staghorn sumac (non poisenous) and bittersweet to hack out of the ground, a huge stump to come out and a good 10ft of hill to dig out on one corner of the run to a 3ft depth at some spots...
me and mum kicked but again...
the bottom frame is together loosely, the side and top rails we'll probbaly try and do tomorrow if the weather behaves, then we get to stretch the chainlink round...
the whole thing will remain quite wobbly untill its bolted to the shed and coop but its huge, (10 sqft per chicken...ours are going to have tripple that!)

im dirty, im achey and im tired...

tonight is chinese food and then a fire pit...
ill sleep well tonight lol

chicks are due to arrive the 1st of april!
*excited*

We were discussing this in chat last night. i'm getting chickens as well. Even though I live in town, our regulation is that we can have up to 10 fowl (ducks etc) inside city limits, just no roosters. So I'll be ordering mine or looking on Craigslist at the end of this month, our weather has been wacky so I don't want them to freeze during shipping.
