Otherwise known as:Hokkaido dog, Hokkaidoken, Ainu-Ken, Ainu Inu
History: The Ainu is a member of the Japanese Spitz family that is rarely seen outside of Japan. They arrived in Japan over 3,000 years ago, when the Ainu tribe brought their dogs with them. They were designated a Japanese Natural Monument in 1937. They have been used in hunting,draft and guarding.
Temperament: Protective and aloof with strangers, requires a lot of socialization at an early age. Would not be good with a first time or timid owner.
Grooming: They should be brushed and combed on a regular basis.
Health: Few genetic problems, generally lives 11-13 years.
Colors: Sesame, wolf gray, brindle, red, brown and white.
