I have an old Kees who has a massive, non-cancerous, but inoperable tumor on his groin. Over the last couple of years I've had him shaved because it was easiest on him, but now he's simply not up to a day at the groomers' shop. I need some tips on the best way to keep him clean and mat free at home. His undercoat is a real challenge for me and I've just been cutting mats out instead of tugging on them in any way. I'm more concerned for his hygiene and comfort than appearance. Thanks in advance.

would you be comfortable shaving him yourself?
you could also check to see if you have a local mobile groomer who could come to you rather than the stress of taking him in for a full day...

I've never shaved him myself. What would I need to get started?

just a good pair of clippers with a guard set, heck for a once in a while quick job even a cheap set of clippers would be good.
give him a bath, dry him off and then using a guard blade of your choice of length just give him a slow steady shave, dont dig in...it doesnt have to look tidy, and you will get better with time. a guard blade will keep from knicking him.

Is there a difference between human and dog clippers?

dog clippers are heavier duty, human clippers tend to get too hot too fast, ive used human clippers but much prefer a good pair of pet clippers.
id buy a can of something calld "cool lube" or "clipper cool" (from the people hair isle) also and spray the clippers frequently no matter if there people or pet, it helps keep the blades cool by reducing friction.
