Default Dog breeds that swallow stuff they shouldn't

Interesting article I found. I don't want to get into a debate about mutt vs. purebred, since that is not my intention of posting this article. I mention this because at the end he talks about "hybrid vigor".

And for those looking to add a dog to their family and want to know which types are least likely to get into this sort of trouble, Hayes recommends a mutt. "I like crossbreeds, as they tend to be much healthier than pedigree dogs due to more outbreeding and hybrid vigor," he says.

I think Labs are the worst... WORST... in my experience. There are Labs who come into the hotel, who will consume a bed if you put it in there! They will consume anything. Anything. I would hate to have a dog like that.

At the dog daycare I used to work at, the owner's ACD x Pit Bull ate rocks. She was there all of the time, and we were told to watch her constantly or she would chew/swallow rocks.

Yeah, I gotta agree that from what I hear from other people, labs are the worst, LOL. My co-worker has a lab and whenever Auggie eats something he shouldn't she tells me about what HER dog has eaten... her stories are always far worse than mine. The eyeglasses - lenses included - has to be my favourite. =P

LOL! That was my immediate thought Virgo will forever be the standard

Ah yes, Virgo. The gold standard for "WTF happened now?!"

Any dog has the potential to eat things they shouldn't, but as a breed trait, Labs pretty much top the list. Chessies are known for being rock hounds, I've seen some interesting things come out of a basset before (thong anyone?) and so on and so forth. Little Miss Vegas, who is the SuperMutt extraordinare, has a thing for tennis balls and paper towels.

Yeah, haha, between my co-worker's dog and the fabulous Virgo, I just automatically think labs when I think of dogs that eat things they shouldn't... LOL.
Not to say that Auggie hasn't had his share of eating things he shouldn't, just, you know, I like it when my dog isn't the WORST dog out there. ;>

Years ago the clinic I worked at did an exploratory on a Chow MIX (so much for the hybrid vigor ) that was losing weight and vomiting - the dog had eaten 6 feet of Christmas garland!!!

I've seen lots of dogs who like socks and undies - things with people smell - but the only correlation I've seen with breeds was that they were the bigger dogs. The little guys just can't stomach it ... lol

I'm also putting in my "vote" for labs being #1 on the "Eating Things They Shouldn't" list.

According to our vet (during Morgan's infamous towel incident), the Labrador Motto is: "It was there, so I ate it."

ETA: For the record, Morgan is a lab MIX.
