Default What would you say?

I work in retail and I'm sure the following story is going to be ALL anyone talks about today at work. It happened about 4 or 5 blocks from my home. I'm sure people will be clamoring for bully breed bans and all of that mess. I'm not nearly educated enough, but I want to be able to provide counter points to their "OMG Pit Bulls are old lady killers and must be erradicated!" The biggest thing that stands out to me is the dog being "secured" by a log chain.

WJBD Radio

Quote:
An 85-year-old Flora woman has been attacked and killed by a pit bull dog Monday afternoon in Flora. Police identify the victim as Rosie Humphreys. They say Humphreys had taken her small poodle for a walk when the poodle was attacked and killed. Police believe Humphreys attempted to kick the pit bull away from her dog and that's when the pit bull turned on her.

A neighbor was treated for a minor hand wound at the Clay County Hospital received when trying to bring the dog under control. Police say the attacking dog's owner and police were eventually able to contain the pit pull until Clay County Animal Control took it away. The dog was later euthanized.

The name of the dog's owner has not yet been released. Police say the investigation is on-going by Flora Police and Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services. The results will be sent to the Clay County State's Attorney's Office to decide if any charges should be filed against the owner of the dog. Police say there had never been any complaints filed with Flora Police or the Clay County Health Department about the dog. They report the owner had the dog secured with a log chain and heavy collar, but the chain broke allowing the dog to go free.

An autopsy is scheduled on Humphrey's later Tuesday. The attack occurred around 2:18 Monday afternoon in the 200 block of Austin Avenue in Flora.

What a horrible situation.

If it were me... I would just say that it was a horrible situation and that I was glad this dog had been PTS, however, one dog is never an indication of an entire breed.

I'd be interested to know if it was an actual pit bull or just some breed that they couldn't identify and gave the generic "baby-killer" label to.

Exactly. So many dogs that are labeled "Pit Bull" are erroneously identified, often in an effort to sell papers.

"American Staffordshire Terrier attacks and kills poodle" doesn't sell as well as "Pit Bull kills poodle and then turns on old lady"

"Generic unidentifiable mutt attacks and kills poodle."

I'd say the one and only man of a certain race in my neighborhood shot and killed two teachers, but we aren't banning them. If we are going to be judgmental and racist with one species, why not all?

Oh, right. Because it isn't accurate and doesn't work.
