Default Don't catch a bat with a fishnet

I got home from the guild last night to see my 85 year old mother in her pjs and Hyia in nightgown on the front porch with a fishnet. I got closer to see a bat was in the fishnet. My Mother cannot see well and she didn't know he was hopelessly entangled. I had her get her sharpest sewing scissors. HE was so scared he had bit the metal wire of the net and was crying pitifully. His little leg was through the hole of the net in several different places so that it fit like a sleeve for about 2 inches. I very so carefully clipped one thread a time hoping i didn't nick him and i didn't. When i finally freed his little arm he flew over to the wall. I didn't know if he was hurt or not and went in to find something appropriate like a bucket to catch him with but when I got back he was gone. So he must be ok. So if you have to catch a bat, don't use the fish net to a fishtank. GEt a bucket and a piece of cardboard. IT will work a lot better.

Wow Smkie, seems like animals know who they need when rescuing is required.

Aw, poor little guy. At least she was trying to catch it without killing, but I guess she didn't realize he'd be stuck there.

I've already caught one once with our pool net, but the meshing is a lot different then a fishnet, very small holes so he didn't get caught up in it.

poor batty. good news is there very resilient and hes prolly regailing his epic tail to the entire belfry :P

i usually use a heavy towel for rescues but a bucket would definatly work. butterfly nets are good too, they dont get tangled in the realy fine netting

Did Hy say why she caught the bat? Was it in the house or something?

Glad you were able to free him with relative ease.......I love bats, they eat bugs which I detest! LOL

The bat was in Hy's bedroom! Usually they are in the basement and do not bother anyone. How this one got upstairs i do not know. THe netting on this was similar to a butterfly net, it was fine but it was also really old so i don't know if it tore with his struggling or not and if that is how he got it stuck through the way he did. His/her little sides were heaving with the breathing so hard. I was just praying i wouldn't nick the skin, it was stretched tight. He held so still and i was very grateful for that. WHen i clipped the last thread he was gone so fast, literally in the blink of an eye. I am a bat fan too. It was tempting to really take a good look at him but i didn't. He/she needed out of there as quickly as possible before the struggling began again so I just concentrated on the netting.

Ah, so glad you could set him loose without harm I've got a soft spot for the maligned little creatures. I'd love to set up some bat houses in my back yard.

I took a communiversity woodworking class in order to make a bat house. It was held at a local high school. I was the only woman in there and the rest was obviously men who hogged all the machines with their projects and no one wanted to show me how to use the ones i needed. So i went over to the jigsaw something i understood and cut out a vulture with my board. It was suppose to be a CLASS but oh well. My vulture turned out really awesome too. I used a wood burning tool to put in the wrinkles and feathers. I was very disappointed.
