Default Christmas Cookies.

What are your favorite kinds? I decided to start making christmas cookies today (a bit early, but who cares.) so i thought I would ask what kinds to you make every year? Do you make the same ones or switch off?
Today I'm making cinnamone cookies. Pretty much a sugar cookie recipe without the cream and with cinnamon. Also with a tiny bit of chilie. YUM.

Well... for me, you just can't beat old classics. Vanillekipferl, if done right have to be one of my favorite Christmas cookies.

I have an oooold Christmas themed recipe book I got from my Grandma- there are many very yummy old, original Christmas cookie recipes in there.

While not specifically Christmas themed, Christmas time is not complete for me without Brown Eyed Susan cookies. My best friend's mom used to make these and I made sure I got the recipe from her. She's passed now, so I make them for Bob every year. That reminds me, he's coming for dinner tonight. Maybe I'll toss a batch in.

The pic is from last year

Well these aren't specifically Christmas cookies, but I do make a bunch of them around Christmas because if I don't I get complaints from most of my family! (not just the household members, but sisters, brothers, cousins, etc! LOL)

Kevin's favorite and a recipe from his mother as a matter of fact.

Banana, Oatmeal, Chocolate chip:

1 1/2 C flour
1 C sugar
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp nutmeg
3/4 C shortening
1 egg (beaten)
1 C mash banana (about 2 bananas) going black is better of course, LOL
1 3/4 C oatmeal
1 12 oz bag choc. Chips

Sift dry ingredients in a bowl. Cut in shortening. Add egg, bananas, oats, and chips a little of each at a time so they mix well. Stir until completely mixed. Drop by rounded teaspoons onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 400 for 15 minutes or less. (do NOT over cook or they get dry and want to crumble)

I plan on making lots of gingerbread cookies! I have the cookie cutters... next step is to buy the icing and sprinkles and candy for decorating them.

Coop, I am SO stealing that recipe.

Snickerdoodles are a huge hit around here. I made lots of batches of cookies. I do chocolate colored sugar cookies and cut them into triangles...dried cherries and red noses and mini pretzels are antlers. Of course, snowmen sugar cookies. Peppermint patties and peppermint bark, though not cookies, are a must.

Haha I just looked up Vanillekipferl! I make those two, but here we called them almond crescents. They're soooo buttery and melty!

For every year since I was eight, my mother and I did MASSIVE Christmas cookie baking. It would start before Thanksgiving, making and freezing what could be, and end with a 12 hour day of baking everything that didn't freeze well and doing the decorating. Generally 12 - 15 different kinds, and several batches of most. We would run out of places in the house to put trays. Last year was the first year we skipped it, and we are skipping this year too. It's a bit of a relief to not be stressed about it, but sad too. Kind of the end of an era.

We had some kinds that got made every year, and then we'd switch some up. The regulars I can think of off the top of my head:

Gingerbread men and woman (the woman carrying tiny gingerbread babies)
Regular sugar cookies cut into Christmas trees and decorated
Chocolate sugar cookies (one of my favorites) cut into flying reindeer with red noses and wreaths around their necks
Thumbprint cookies with red and green icing
Peanut butter/Hershey kiss cookies with red and green sugar
Snowballs (made with crushed nuts and rolled in powdered sugar)
Almond flavored candy canes
Tiny pecan tarts (my other favorite)
Holly cookies (two cinnamon flavored circle cookies, with raspberry jam between them, with white glaze and holly leaves painted on them)

I do homemade oreos, but make mint filling to go in the middle by adding mint, finely ground candy cane and a drop of green food colouring to the icing i put in the middle. Makes them taste like peppermint patties.

Also stained glass cookies since you can hang a bunch on the tree too for decoration. Here's a recipe for them
