Default help with mostly blind dog!

Tomorrow I am getting an ACD with Progressive Retinal Atrophy. The dogs is mostly blind, and I have never had a blind dog. (its a foster situation)

What can I expect? Is there anything different about introducing her to my dogs, and my cats since she is mostly blind? How about getting her used to the lay out of the house?

Well, I'd start by walking her around the house a couple of times on a leash, letting her explore, sniff, etc. Same with the yard. As for introducing her to your crew, I think I'd do it one at a time so she isn't overwhelmed.

Owners of Blind Dogs

Has a lot of good information on it about living with and working with blind dogs. They even have a message board.

Just be careful, this dog was sighted and then probably lost it pretty sudden. PRA can be ugly like that. Make sure she has a safe place (like a covered crate) where she can go and feel secure, that she can't be 'snuck up on'. Other than that, just be sure everyone speaks before touching her. Get her used to the feel of your hands on her. Announce yourself, then touch her lightly. Good luck!!!
