Default Abortion a part of government healthcare?

There is a huge battle waging amongst pro-choice women's advocates mandating that elective abortions be provided for in the new healthcare reform and many Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate that do not want elective abortions to be paid for.

What are your thoughts?

Not just because I am personally against such, but I don't feel that my tax dollars should go to pay for such. If you chose to have an abortion as your own personal choice of birth control, then you foot the bill. Not me.

I never asked for anyone else to pay for my fertility treatments and I'm sure many on here would've personally objected.

One point of thought could be:

Jill got herself preg. FOr the sake of argument the condom broke, so she was using BC. She cant afford an abortion or to have a baby but doesnt feal adoption is a option. Maybe her family would disown her for gettnig preg. She goes to a back ally abortionist and gets hurt or killed. Had the gov paid for it she would have had it done right.

Not nessisarily my train of thought but another point to ponder.

The problem with this is that you can't ask our government to make distinctions based on morality. If they are going to cover the abortion based on JennSLK's described situation, they should also cover the "abortions as birth control" situations as well.

I don't agree with abortion at all. I don't believe I'd ever want a child I fathered aborted. However, my choices and beliefs shouldn't be forced on the rest of the country.

So, as much as it sickens me, I'd say that health coverage should cover procedures such as abortion. They should also cover fertility treatments and sterilization procedures.

another point to ponder
jill is drawing welfare and wants to get pregnant but can't. should the govt paid healthcare cover fertility treatments?
making babies is concious action not like getting breast or prostate cancer but very much like smokers getting lung cancer. should you pay for someone to avoid the consequences of their actions?

Well you can bet that smoker's lung cancer treatments will be covered so I suppose the answer is 'yes'. If one is covered, the other should be as well. Both are conscious choices.

I think it all has to be in, or all has to be out. if you want abortion to be paid for then so should all BC, fertility treatments, etc.

We have anthem bc/bs.........it doesn't pay for abortions, fertility treatments, or even weight loss procedures. I don't know why people should expect government health care to do it either.

If desperate people do desperate things (as in Jenn's back alley example) then that is on them. If that sounds cold, then it's cold. I know there are horrible circumstances out there, I truly do understand that and my heart goes out to them, but we as a society CAN NOT and SHOULD NOT be held hostage and liable for every bad choice and dumb thing a person does...........it's preposterous. The line must be drawn and responsibility given BACK to those responsible for the deed.

Personally I would not support the government (ok lets put it out there, taxpayers) paying for abortions.
Some may argue that it will help our welfare system and unwanted children being in it. However, I also feel that those who are popping out kids to be supported by welfare would not partake in government funded abortions.

Why should I pay for someone else's mistake? I never feel a child is a mistake, but those that abort obviously think that being pregnant is a mistake. They should be held accountable for their actions. I shouldn't be held accountable for Little Suzy's poor judgement and I shouldn't have to pay for it either. I do sympathize for rape victims though and would support something to that effect. I'd also support people being sterilized, that's a personal and conscious choice just like having sex is.

It's just another way for people to abuse the system and tax dollars that most of them aren't paying.
